Humans are very good at reacting. It is a long-standing, hardwired behavior that has allowed us to survive for so long and has perpetuated our species through the toughest of times. Our homes have gotten destroyed by wind, water, and fire… and we rebuild them. Our tribes and people have been attacked by outsiders… and we fight back and go to war. We get hungry… we find food. We get cold, we get indoors or bundle up. We get sick… we lay low, stay in bed, and do what we have to in order to regain our health.

In all times of crisis, when we, or the things we depend on, are threatened, we often get to them late. The reason is, it takes a certain amount of harm or damage before we are aware there is a problem. The earliest signals of threatening circumstances are usually missed or overlooked. After all, if we reacted strongly to every potential or perceived threat, we’d be overwhelmed and inundated to the point we could not live.

Even though getting to things late often requires energy, time, and money, there comes a point when there is no hope, a time when things are too far gone. Late can be manageable, but too late leaves us no chance. Too late means that there simply is no chance of recovery.

In our office, a patient’s first day visit includes a consultation, an examination, an x-ray (if needed), then a report of the findings. In the report of findings, we go over the exam findings, show the patient the x-rays, point out what the problems are, where they are, and what they need to do to get better. It is usually when I am pointing at the x-rays, showing them areas where there is arthritis, degenerating joints and/or degenerated discs, that the patient slumps with disappointment, wells up with fear, and says… “So, I waited too long? It’s too late?” My answer is usually the same… “It’s late, but not too late.”

It takes years for degenerative changes to show up on an x-ray, so by the time we see that, the problem absolutely has been building for years. So, yes… if you have those findings on x-ray, it is late. But… you can have arthritis and degenerative discs and have no pain, be fully functional, and lead an active and full life. So, while it is late, it is not too late.

Left uncorrected long enough, though, there could be permanent nerve damage, the bones could begin to fuse, and the problems could become unmanageable. So, there is a point where problems go from late to too late, thus causing a permanent, uncorrectable, and life-altering condition.

Another mistake we humans make is that we often think it is too late, but it isn’t. It may be late, but there still may be hope, but we give up, assuming it is too late. No matter how far gone something may seem, it always warrants at least some attention and effort on our part to ensure that we’ve exhausted everything. If you quit, there is absolutely no chance of succeeding. Assuming that it is too late eliminates all chances of success.

Waiting until a crisis or problem gets worse is definitely more problematic than if we prevent a problem in the first place, but as bad as late is, late is better than too late.

And remember… the key to true success is to be proactive. Late is better than too late, but preventing a crisis is by far the best strategy. Anticipating future issues, taking regular action, and not waiting for the bottom to drop out is far better in terms of having an optimal life. So, strive to be proactive and to prevent issues from even showing up. But if you have waited too long and find yourself dealing with issues, even if it’s late, you can usually remedy the situation. Just don’t confuse late with too late!

Your body was designed to heal.

A cut on your finger heals. A broken bone mends.

The healing doesn't come from the doctor. The healing comes from within you.

The role of chiropractic is not to "cure" disease. The role of chiropractic is to help remove interference from the nervous system so your brain and body can communicate the way they were designed to.

When your nervous system functions better, your body has a greater opportunity to adapt, recover, heal, and express health.

For nearly 29 years, I've watched amazing things happen when people restore proper function to their spine and nervous system. Less pain. Better movement. Better sleep. More energy. Improved quality of life.

The adjustment doesn't do the healing.

YOU do.

The adjustment simply helps unlock your body's incredible God-given healing potential.

When I was a young chiropractic student, I learned something that changed my life.

Almost three decades later, it's still perhaps the most important understanding I have about health and healing:

The power that made the body heals the body. It can happen no other way.

For over 30 years, I've contemplated the deep implications of that statement - and how life-changing it can be once you truly take it in.

Consider this. Your body is an unmatched miracle of nature. It's made of roughly 70 trillion cells. (Here's something fascinating: only about 30 trillion of those are actually human cells. The other 40 trillion or so aren't human at all - they're mostly bacteria.)

Those cells organize themselves into the great systems of the body:
Your nervous system
Your cardiovascular system
Your hormonal system
…and many more. Every one of them has to work in coordination with the others - and that coordination is mediated by the nervous system.

There are two understandings I that I try to convey to every patient I care for. They sound simple but their implications are profound:

First: The body is self-healing and self-regulating.

If you cut your finger, it heals. If you cut the finger of a co**se, it does not. The difference is the life-force within you. That healing isn't something you manage or even think about - it simply happens. And it isn't only repair, it’s also regulation.

Right now, as you read this, your heart is beating. Your liver is doing its work. Digestion is underway. None of it requires your conscious attention. The body regulates itself.

Second: The nervous system is the master system and controller of it all.

We live our entire human experience - our health, and everything else - through our nervous system.

And here is where it matters for you and me. When stress overwhelms the nervous system, we begin to lose our health. That stress shows up in three forms:

Physical - how we use our bodies, or fail to use them.
Chemical - what we put into our bodies. Good nutrition heals; toxins and deficiencies wear us down.
Psychological - perhaps the most insidious of all. Toxic thoughts, old traumas, the things that aren't physical or chemical but shape our health profoundly.
These are simple ideas. But sometimes the simplest understandings are the ones that change the trajectory of your life.

When you truly embrace that there is a powerful intelligence within you - that the power that made the body heals the body - it shifts your perspective away from looking for pharmaceutical solutions (which add toxic load) and more toward lifestyle changes that support the body.

Lately I've been seeing too many people whose health is quietly (and in some cases, not so quietly), slipping. Less sleep. More pain. Energy fading. Sometimes a diagnosis begins to surface.

They are drifting away from their true-selves, toward a future they would never choose.

For today, I'd simply ask you to sit with these ideas. How do you relate to them? How do you feel about your health and your energy right now? Would it mean something to you to be genuinely healthier a year from now - rather than to keep losing a little more of your vitality?

I have zero judgment about how anyone chooses to live. That's not my place. But if you're looking to improve things, I'm always here to help.

Most Americans go through more physical, chemical, and emotional stress in 30 days than our ancestors did in an entire year.

And here’s the truth:
We live our life through our nervous system.

It’s not just about sore backs or kinks in your neck. Chiropractic care is about ensuring your nervous system is functioning at its best—because everything you experience, from stress to sensation, is filtered through that system.

Your body interprets all stress—physical, chemical, emotional—through afferent and efferent nerve pathways. When the stress is too much (and let’s face it, today’s world is full of it), it can cause subluxations, interfering with communication between your brain and your body.

This breakdown in communication doesn’t just cause discomfort—it prevents your body from adapting, healing, and thriving the way it’s designed to.

The stresses of life aren’t going away.
We’ve had them in the past.
We’ll have them in the future.
But the question is: Is your nervous system equipped to handle them?

That’s the power of chiropractic.
It’s not about chasing symptoms—it’s about restoring function.
It’s about keeping your spine and nervous system clear of interference so that your innate intelligence can work as it was intended—keeping you well.

✔ Stay well-adjusted.
✔ Don’t wait for symptoms.
✔ Prioritize true wellness care.

Your health depends on your nervous system.
And your nervous system depends on you.

Only 6% of drug advertising is backed by solid evidence.
That’s right- according to a study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ 2004; 328:485), 94% of pharmaceutical ads lack scientific support. 😳

At Hassel Family Chiropractic, we believe in evidence-based, natural care that supports your body’s innate ability to heal—without relying on a prescription pad.

Your health shouldn’t be driven by marketing hype.
It should be grounded in truth, trust, and the power of your nervous system functioning at 100%.

05/27/2026

If there is one area of confusion in America, it involves health and wellness. We are the only species that can’t seem to figure out how to get, and stay, well. And we are the sickest species on the planet.

One of the biggest reasons so many people struggle is because of the ongoing shift in information that we are fed. The medical community has wavered on so many health topics that we can no longer trust what they tell us. We were told that fat causes heart disease and obesity, which spawned the fat-free revolution. It was poor information, fueled by corporate influence and greed, and led to more heart disease and obesity.

The food pyramid, which we now know was heavily influenced by the food industry, was a complete disaster. They told us that our diet should be primarily made up of the “bread, cereal, rice, and pasta” group, advising 6-11 servings from this group daily. Yikes! I wonder how that led to skyrocketing obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and all other chronic illnesses. Duh!

They told us eggs were bad for us… oops… now they’re good for us. Butter is bad, margarine is better… oops… margarine is bad, butter is better. Vioxx is a miracle drug… oops… it causes heart attacks and kills people. Fen-Phen, we were told, was another miracle drug and would end obesity… oops… it caused pulmonary hypertension, heart valve damage, and killed people. (They paid over $13 billion in legal damages.)

Opiates were falsely presented as and sold as a cure for pain, and we were told they were proven safe. Wrong! We were told the COVID vaccine would prevent us from getting COVID and prevent us from spreading it to others. False! They said that once we decoded the human genome, we’d cure cancer (and all other diseases)… oops… turns out our genes are responsible for only less than 5% of all cancers.

And our medical system continues to make false promises, make huge mistakes, and lead us down a path of sickness, obesity, depression, and despair.

You must be getting exhausted from the ever-changing advice and direction of your medical doctors and other so-called experts. What you were told was good for you, now is bad. What once was a medical breakthrough causes more harm than good. I often wonder if medical doctors see the mistakes they have made, realize that they have failed us greatly, and realize that their story keeps changing.

Here is the thing… I have been saying the same thing and telling the same story from the first day I opened my practice. For 29 years, my story has never changed. Why? Because it is rooted in truth, common sense, and actual science. I don’t treat symptoms; I address the cause. I don’t try to outsmart the body; I work with it. I am not influenced by Big Pharma and their lies. I don’t continue doing the same things if the outcomes are not positive. And I know that true wellness, health, and healing is the result of our lifestyle and environment.

The body is a self-regulating, self-healing, self-adapting wonder. When you give the body what it needs, and get rid of what is bad for it, health goes up, and sickness goes down. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors did not struggle with chronic illness, which is our biggest killer right now. They did not have obesity, diabetes, or heart disease, and cancers were very rare. Our success comes from modeling their success. Our health is dictated by what we eat, how much we move, the quality of our sleep, the quality of our relationships, and how we interact with the world around us.

I have been sharing this information for over twenty nine years. I try to get better at conveying the story in ways that are relatable and implementable… but the story never changes. I try to help make the information resonate with you, help you see a better way to live, and help shape your philosophy and paradigm so that you can navigate the nonsense that keeps getting shoved down our throats. How I tell the story changes week to week, but the story is the story.

Imagine a pastor of a church changing “the story” every year or so. You would stop attending that church. Why? Because you wouldn’t know what to believe. A great pastor continues to creatively tell the story, but the story itself never changes.

The truth is the truth. I don’t seek to be right; I seek the truth. The truth is that healing comes from the inside out, that sickness is not due to a lack of pills, that the current medical model has failed us miserably, and that the most impactful things you can do to get well is eat, move, think, and interact congruently with how our ancestors lived.

Be wary of anyone who keeps changing their story. I love that I have been telling the same story for so long.

Happy Healthy Friday!

“If you have a spine, you should see a chiropractor.”
Your spine protects the nervous system — the master communication system between your brain and body. When the spine is functioning properly, the body has a greater opportunity to heal, adapt, and function at its best.

Whether you’re dealing with headaches, neck pain, back pain, stress, tension, poor posture, or simply want to stay proactive with your health, chiropractic care is about helping your body function the way it was designed to.
