Seeing someone who understands your lived experience can:

✓ Reduce shame

✓ Increase trust

✓ Help clients feel understood sooner

✓ Create greater psychological safety

Everyone deserves culturally responsive care—not because every therapist must share your identity, but because every therapist should be equipped to understand how culture shapes mental health.

Sometimes the problem isn't your relationship. It's the survival mode your nervous system has been carrying.

Trauma doesn't just affect how you feel—it affects how you connect.

When your nervous system has learned that relationships aren't safe, you may find yourself:
• Pulling away when things get close.
• Overthinking every conversation.
• Needing constant reassurance.
• Becoming defensive to protect yourself.
• Feeling emotionally exhausted, even in healthy relationships.

These aren't character flaws.

They're adaptive responses that once helped you survive.

The good news? Your nervous system can learn safety. Healing doesn't mean you'll never be triggered again—it means you won't have to stay stuck in survival mode.

💬 Have you ever realized your nervous system—not your relationship—needed the most attention?

Many people were taught:

Pray about it.
Stay busy.
Don't tell family business.
Therapy is for "crazy people."

Faith and therapy can coexist.

Strength and vulnerability can coexist.

Healing begins where shame ends. Research consistently shows stigma remains a significant barrier to seeking mental health care in many BIPOC communities.

You may have inherited patterns you never asked for.

Generational trauma isn't just about what happened in your family—it's also about what was never talked about, what was normalized, and what your nervous system learned to do to survive.

Sometimes it looks like:
• Believing vulnerability is unsafe.
• Feeling responsible for everyone else's emotions.
• Struggling to rest without guilt.
• Expecting rejection before connection.
• Living in survival mode, even when you're finally safe.

Understanding these patterns isn't about blaming previous generations. Many of them did the best they could with the resources they had.

Healing begins when we become aware of what we've inherited and intentionally choose what we want to carry forward.

You may not have started the cycle, but you have the power to change its direction.

Which pattern have you had to unlearn on your healing journey?

Many people in marginalized communities learned:

"I can't fall apart."

"I have to keep going."

"I don't have time to feel."

Survival deserves respect.

But surviving isn't the same as living.

You deserve healing—not just endurance.

Strength includes asking for support.

July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, honoring the work of an advocate who fought to ensure communities of color were seen, heard, and supported.

Culture influences:

How we express emotions
Whether we ask for help
How trauma is understood
What healing looks like

Healing doesn't require abandoning your culture.

It requires care that honors it.

What messages about mental health did you grow up hearing?

💛 Now Accepting New Clients (Ages 6–18) 💛
Evening Appointments Available

If your child has been struggling—emotionally, behaviorally, or socially—you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Meet Sharisheka LaMay, LMHC Intern at Courageous Minds Counseling ✨

She works with children and teens (ages 6–18) to help them:
✔️ Express emotions in healthy ways
✔️ Build confidence and self-esteem
✔️ Improve behavior and coping skills
✔️ Navigate anxiety, stress, and life changes
✔️ Strengthen communication at home and school

Let’s be honest—kids don’t always have the words…
Sometimes it comes out as attitude, shutdowns, or acting out.

That’s where Sharisheka comes in 💛
She creates a safe, supportive space where young clients can open up, feel understood, and actually want to engage.

🕔 Evening Availability (because we know life is busy):
Mondays & Thursdays

Limited openings available: To schedule email [email protected] with a subject line: SHARISHEKA LAMAY

✨ Now Accepting New Clients – Immediate Openings ✨

Looking for a therapist who feels safe, real, and genuinely gets it? Meet Madyson Guzman, MSW Intern at Courageous Minds Counseling 💛

Madyson is passionate about helping you feel seen, supported, and empowered—not judged, rushed, or “fixed.”

Her approach is:
✔️ Trauma-informed
✔️ Person-centered
✔️ Rooted in emotional safety + collaboration

She helps clients:
• Explore patterns in thoughts, emotions, and relationships
• Understand how past experiences show up in the present
• Build coping skills that actually work in real life
• Move from feeling stuck → to feeling more in control

And let’s be real… sometimes you don’t need someone to “tell you what to do.”
You need someone to sit with you, get curious with you, and help you figure it out without pressure. That’s her lane.

Bonus: If faith or spirituality matters to you, she can integrate that into your healing in a way that feels natural and supportive.

Outside the therapy room? She’s a cozy homebody—think gaming, music, and recharging in peaceful spaces (so yes… she understands burnout on a real level 😌).
