Can I ask the biggest favor of you all?
California legislators are meeting on March 10 to discuss animal chiropractic and its scope. As it stands now, California animal chiropractors need to be under DIRECT VETERINARY SUPERVISION in order to treat ALL animals! It does not matter that I went to school and certification courses. It doesn’t matter that I stay certified by completing continuing education. It doesn’t matter that I hold MY OWN MALPRACTICE to be able to do this!
What does this mean? It means for every animal I see, I LEGALLY have to work with a veterinarian present. How would you feel if your chiropractor for yourself had to work at a medical office with an MD watching their every move? Wouldn’t that make your access to both the MD and DC very difficult? And very expensive?!
Well, that’s what California is making DCs do in order to treat animals. The veterinary field is narrowing each day. Vets are burnt out and quitting because they are overworked and underpaid. Su***de rates with vets are some of the worst across all professions. And California wants to add more to their plate and spread them even thinner with supervising animal chiropractors! Your access as an animal owner is so limited!
In several states, like Colorado, certified animal chiropractors do not need direct supervision or a referral from a veterinarian to gain access to animal chiropractic. It’s simple, you just call them up for an appointment! I haven’t look at the stats, but I bet there is less vet burnout there.
What are certified animal chiropractors doing? We are trying to help everyone! We are raising money to make legislative changes, attending legislative events, and garnering as much support as possible. We want to take the burden off of the veterinarians and help with musculoskeletal issues without a vet (with no chiropractic training) watching our every move and stealing away their time from more emergent issues. No animal chiropractor wants to diagnose your animal! And we certainly don’t want you to have to jump through hoops to have your animal seen for a simple 15-20 minute appointment!
What can you do? Please please write a brief statement on how chiropractic has helped your animal! It doesn’t have to even be what I personally have done (I really need no credit here). It doesn’t have to be more than a paragraph. Did you have to go through anything to have them seen? Tell us about your struggles to gain access. This shouldn’t take you more than a few minutes. And YOU could change animal chiropractic for good!
