✨ Master the Half Forward Fold (Ardha Uttanasana)! ✨

A flat back is more important than touching the floor.

Hinge from your hips, engage your core, and keep your spine long.

If your hands don't reach the floor comfortably, place them on yoga blocks to maintain proper alignment and protect your lower back.

Blocks are a tool to support us in our yoga journey. Some people think using 'tools' means something is lacking but reframe that thought to understand the tools we use in yoga, blocks, straps, chairs, are all supporting us for a safe and effective practice.

Benefits:
✓ Helps improve spinal alignment and posture
✓ Activates the core for better stability
✓ Stretches the hamstrings and calves
✓ Reduces strain on the lower back by maintaining a neutral spine
✓ Encourages proper hip hinging for safer forward bends

Good form always beats deeper range. Practice mindfully and let your flexibility improve naturally. 🧘‍♀️

Disclaimer: Listen to your body and don't do it if it hurts. Always see your P*P prior to starting any new yoga or fitness program.

Mistakes people make when starting a fitness program and what you can do to make it work for you.

IMO the biggest mistake a lot of people make in stepping into a fitness routine, hiring a trainer and maybe buying some cute workout clothes is not fully realizing that this isn't a one off or temporary thing to do because their friend or doctor told them they need to exercise.

The key to longevity, and quality of life, is building muscles.
Yes. Muscles. Particularly glutes, quads, calves and upper back. All imperative for gait and reducing the risk of falls.

This is the journey and adventure of a lifetime.

It is not so much about esthetics, although that can be a by-product of exercise, but more about being able to, with ease, perform your activities of daily living and have your independence when you reach your 60's, 70's, 80's and beyond, and the sooner you start the better!

We start to lose bone density at age 30, it is never too early to start taking care of this precious vehicle that will transport us through decades we have on this planet. And for that we need to be strong.

My tips for starting (any) fitness program and hiring a trainer:

*Realize this can change your life with consistency, so some mindset work around your goals and your schedule. And, it is work. And there will be sore muscles.

*You cannot out-exercise a poor diet. And frankly, I am not a fan of the word 'diet' but what you're consuming can make or break your efforts.

*Allow yourself grace for being human, but you have to change what you're doing to reach your goals, and with the proper guidance can be an exciting adventure in and of itself.

*When hiring a trainer, ask questions about their experience and qualifications and success rates. Hiring a trainer is a game changer for your success. A gym 'buddy' is great but if they don't show up, hmmmm will you?

*A trainer is an investment in your health, wellbeing, accountability, success, and essentially your life!

*It is also advised to consult with your doctor prior to starting an exercise program and make sure to share pertinent information with your trainer for your safety and for a workout program curated specifically to meet you where your at to work on your goals.

With the right tools, mindset, and a qualified trainer, your goals will be met and your health will improve, you'll have more energy, sleep more soundly, and a lifestyle you've been dreaming of!

I can help you with your fitness goals, nutrition, mindset and accountability.

Comment "Ready" and we'll book a call. That's the first step.

To your stellar health and wellness!

I've sat on this for a while now and its time has come.

I decided to document my journey over the next 14 months to celebrate a rather monumental birthday! (a year out from this August).

There are things I will need to get better at, tech things, showing up doing lives, talking about the hard things, and showing women that there is this amazing life when we don't give up on ourselves.

I decided I would start lifting heavy.

Not entirely sure what that will look like at this moment, I do have to be mindful of the titanium in my spine. That hasn't stopped me from much in my personal training career that has spanned 20 years to date. I became a personal training at 49 after losing 100 pounds and reversing type 2 diabetes and keeping it off all these years.

I'm starting with deadlifts. I have all the protective gear sans a belt that I won't need right away.

It does not escape me for a moment that I do not look (or act) my age. And I can't deny I smile when peoples jaw drop when they hear my age.

I tribute that to, in part, genetics, the fact I've never smoked ci******es, and although I drank pretty much a lot when I was younger I haven't drank now for years. I have also been vegetarian, then vegan for 34 years, have not taken any prescription meds in the last 11 years sans an antibiotic for an ear infection about 5 years ago, diligent with my personal routine of yoga, exercise and rest and probably most importantly...my mindset, how I walk with love on this planet and my faith.

With this decision my coaching practice will pivot with my personal pivot here. My focus has always been supporting women in their health and fitness journeys, but I will be super focused on supporting women heading into this next chapter of life in their 6th decade of life and beyond.

Join me on this journey to celebrate my 70th birthday!!

I'm entertaining ideas of contests and challenges and prizes along the way for those who support this amazing journey and celebration!

I will keep you posted on where you can find me, platforms (probably YouTube, maybe Substack) and here of course.
I am available for training locally, I train out of 2 gyms and do in-home training as well, and on zoom if you are not in my area.

Life and nutrition coaching are part of my sessions.

Sometimes the door closes on a part of our lives,
not because we failed but because something tells us
that this no longer fits our life and it is time to move on.

So lock the door, shed your tears and when you’re ready,
turn around and look for a new door that’s opened.

It’s a sign you’re no longer the person you once were,
it’s time to change into a newer version of you.

One of the greatest gifts we can give to the world
is to own our s**t, heal, and help others do the same.

Until the healing occurs, all else is bulls**t.

Behind every dope woman is one hell of a story ...
It’s all going to be Okay.

Tandy

Growth in yoga is not about perfection ~ it’s about progression.

Start where you are, trust the process, and let every variation prepare your body for the full expression of the pose.

Chair-Supported Ustrasana
Perfect for beginners to safely open the chest and improve back flexibility with extra support.

Bolster-Supported Ustrasana
Helps deepen the heart-opening stretch while reducing pressure on the lower back and improving posture.

Full Ustrasana (Camel Pose)
A powerful backbend that strengthens the spine, improves flexibility, boosts energy, and opens the heart chakra.

Every small step leads to a stronger and more confident you.

Yoga blocks could also be used to modify Camel.

Disclaimer: Use caution, especially if you have any back / spine issues. Always consult your doctor prior to starting any fitness or yoga program. Listen to your body, there should be no pain for any of these postures. If you experience pain, stop immediately. All forms of yoga and exercise can be modified to accommodate every body and everybody!

Improve your flexibility, mobility, and posture with these 6 powerful yoga stretches. These poses help release tight muscles, increase hip mobility, and reduce stiffness from long sitting hours. Save this routine and practice daily for a healthier, more mobile body.

1. Downward Facing Dog – Stretches the hamstrings, calves, shoulders, and spine while improving full-body flexibility and blood circulation.

2. Quad Stretch – Opens the front thighs and hip flexors, helping reduce tightness caused by sitting or intense workouts.

3. Pigeon Pose – Deeply stretches the hips and glutes, relieves lower back tension, and improves hip mobility.

4. Runner’s Lunge – Lengthens the hip flexors, hamstrings, and groin while improving balance and lower-body flexibility.

5. Easy Twist – Enhances spinal mobility, stretches the chest and hips, and helps improve posture and core activation.

6. Lizard Twist – Opens the hips, stretches the inner thighs, and increases rotational mobility in the spine and pelvis.

Practice slowly, breathe deeply, and never force the stretch.

Illustration of information only, please consult your doctor prior to starting any fitness or yoga practice and make sure the instructor/teacher is well versed in their craft.

I once hit rock bottom and know I never want to go there again.

It took a lot of hard work to come back.

My health had never been this dangerous.

I lost 100 pounds and reversed type 2 diabetes and kept it off for 20 years.

What’s holding you back from changing the direction of your life?

Decide. Then start. Start where you are. And keep going.

When you need support, I’m here.

Tandy

Strengthen and support your knees naturally with these effective yoga poses! Each posture improves flexibility, stability, circulation, and muscle strength around the knee joints while reducing stiffness and discomfort.

1. Hero Pose (Virasana)
Improves knee flexibility, stretches thighs and ankles, and helps reduce stiffness in the joints.

2. Wide-Legged Forward Bend
Strengthens hamstrings, calves, and inner thighs while increasing blood flow around the knees.

3. Half Moon Pose
Builds balance and stability by activating the quadriceps, glutes, and knee-supporting muscles.

4. Lord of the Dance Pose
Enhances leg strength, coordination, and joint control while improving posture and balance.

5. Reclining Bound Angle Pose
Releases tension in hips and inner thighs, helping reduce pressure and tightness around the knees.

6. Reclining Hero Pose
Deeply stretches the quads and knee area, improving mobility and relieving stiffness after long sitting hours.

Practice gently and consistently for healthier, stronger knees.

**It is not only okay, but recommended to 'soften' or slightly bend your knees (in any pose) if your hamstrings are tight to prevent injury.
