A 2014 study published in Science found that when people were left alone in a room with nothing but their thoughts for 15 minutes, many chose to give themselves electric shocks rather than sit quietly. 67% of men. 25% of women. All of whom had previously said they'd pay money to avoid being shocked.
Solitude isn't easy. For people in recovery, it can be especially hard.
