Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day was meant to honor the Union and the Confederate soldiers who died during the American Civil War. In 1971, it became a federal holiday honoring all soldiers who lost their lives defending our nation and fighting for our freedom.
Today, when we are enjoying our BBQs and hanging out with friends and family, take a moment to remember why this day is celebrated—the more than 1.1 million US soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
