Yesterday was a fun day. During a full clinic day, we got a heads up that a mama was in labor. We let our last appointment know, & had a speedy last appointment & went on to shuffle over to this laboring mama’s home in Washington.
“Do you see the shape of her belly? That’s the shape of an OP, or a breech belly.” Kim said quietly to the students. This mama wanted a pretty hands off birth, but we started to see at first what appeared to be a tiny bit of a bald noggin as she was pushing in the pool. After a bit Kat asked if she could palpate mom’s belly.
Kim pulled out her handheld ultrasound, & there it was, confirmed. A b***y in the pelvis.
After an informed decision making conversation, making sure this family knew they could go to the hospital if they wanted, they decided to proceed with a vaginal breech birth at home.
A quick phone call to & she rushed over. The HazelTree team believes in breech, & is trained in breech, but having a set of hands that has handled more breech births than your own have can feel so reassuring.
So this mama worked hard & followed her body & birthed her baby b***y first. She did beautifully, supported by her husband & her wonderful doula & this birth will go down in HazelTree history as our first, surprise, primip breech!
We’re so grateful that our team has been able to learn about breech birth with & & glad to be a tiny team on the right side of history doing our part to
