You can love your family and still choose a different pattern. 🌿

Murray Bowen called it differentiation of self: staying close to the people you love without losing yourself in the process. It isn’t distance. It’s staying yourself while staying connected.

If you have family time this weekend, try this before you walk in: *Am I about to respond, or react?* Anxiety is contagious in families, and so is calm.

Swipe for a few reflections, and save this for when you need it.

Working on your own part is the work. If you’re ready to explore your family-of-origin patterns, I work with individual adults in Coeur d’Alene. Link in bio.

Your first relationships wrote the blueprint. 🌿

The way you handle closeness, conflict, and needing other people didn’t appear out of nowhere. It was shaped early, and it shows up in adult life as patterns you may have never had words for.

Swipe through to see the four attachment styles: secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized. Most of us recognize ourselves in more than one.

The good news is that these patterns can change. In individual therapy, I use attachment-based work and EMDR to help adults understand where their patterns began and build new ones.

Save this for later, and share it with someone who might need it. 🤍

Talk therapy is powerful — but some patterns aren’t stored in your thoughts. They’re stored in your body.

If you’ve done the work before and still find yourself reacting the same way, stuck in the same loop, or reaching for the same after-work drink to come down from the day — that’s not a failure of insight. It’s often a sign the nervous system needs a different kind of help.

At Restart Counseling, EMDR and somatic approaches work alongside attachment-based therapy to reach what talking alone can’t — whether that’s family-of-origin patterns, complex trauma, or the quiet ways high-functioning adults learn to self-regulate.

Healing happens in relationship, at a pace your nervous system can trust.

Some of us grew up with a mother who was there, and still didn’t get enough of what attachment needs: being seen, soothed, and delighted in.

Incomplete maternal attachment isn’t about blame. It’s about a gap, and gaps can form in loving homes too.

In Women Who Run With the Wolves, Clarissa Pinkola Estés uses the Ugly Duckling to describe a child hatched into a flock that can’t recognize her nature. In adulthood it can look like feeling like an outsider, over-adapting, struggling to receive care, and a harsh inner critic.

It can heal, in relationship and with skilled support. Attachment-based therapy, EMDR, and somatic work can help you learn to mother yourself and find your flock.

Save this for the day you need it, and send it to someone who might.

You’re good at your job. Maybe great at it. And there’s this other track running underneath it that you keep telling yourself you’ll deal with “once things calm down.”

Most high-functioning people don’t struggle with knowing what they want — they struggle with looking honestly at the gap between that and what their daily choices are actually producing.

And if you’ve already done the insight work — if you know exactly where the pattern came from and still find yourself overridden in the moment anyway — more understanding isn’t the missing piece. It’s something else worth working through directly.

No rock-bottom story required. No pathologizing. Just a clear-eyed look at whether the life you’re building matches the one you say you want.

If this sounds like you, I work with individual adults navigating exactly this — swipe through, and reach out if it resonates. Link in bio.

Shame-based parenting doesn’t require yelling. It can be as quiet as a disappointed sigh, a comparison to a sibling, or love that cooled the moment you fell short.

The message a child absorbs isn’t “that behavior was wrong” — it’s “I am wrong.” And that belief doesn’t stay in childhood. It shows up decades later as perfectionism, chronic self-criticism, difficulty accepting praise, overachieving, people-pleasing, and hiding the parts of yourself you’re afraid will disappoint someone.

Here’s the part most people miss: you can know, intellectually, that the belief isn’t true — and still feel the shame fire the moment you make a mistake. That’s because these beliefs aren’t stored as logic. They’re stored the way memories are, with feeling and conviction attached.

This is where EMDR does something self-reflection alone often can’t — it works with the negative belief itself, not just the story around it, so the nervous system can finally update what it’s been running on since childhood.

If any of this sounds familiar, swipe through 👉

Summer’s winding down.

The routines are shifting again — school schedules, earlier mornings, less flexibility in the day. It’s a natural moment to ask: where did you land this summer, and what do you actually want the next season to look like?

Getting “back into a routine” doesn’t have to mean just calendars and carpool lines. It’s also a chance to rebuild structure around your own mental health — therapy, rest, boundaries — instead of it being the first thing that falls off the list when things get busy.

If this fall feels like a good time to prioritize yourself, I’m here.
