True student success is the result of the preparation one does beforehand, and this includes staying ahead of mental health issues.

Teens typically experience mood changes, have low motivation, and sleep issues --- things not necessarily the signs of a mental health problem.
However, rates of anxiety, depression, self harm, and su***de have been on the rise over the past decade (or more) and are significantly higher in Generation Z than previous generations.
According to a 2023 Gallup survey, 47% of Gen Z-ers ages 12-26 often or always feel anxious, and 22% often or always feel depressed.

It’s important to encourage teens to stay emotionally and physically healthy.
This includes:
☛ Maintaining healthy eating habits
☛ Staying with a regular sleep schedule
☛ Keeping active/Balancing screen time
☛ Suggesting acupuncture treatments
Acupuncture helps balance the nervous system, promotes relaxation, improved well-being, and releases neurotransmitters that positively influence mood and stress levels.
It allows for deeper processing and can also help with focus and concentration.
After receiving acupuncture treatments throughout their high school years, it’s remarkable to see how well young adults do in life's journey.

Getting the healthcare and treatment for our kids at a better level just helps the world for future generations!🎓

Many people will endure traumatic events throughout their lives and no two people deal with emotions the same way.
Following a traumatic event, it’s common for people to experience distressing memories, dreams, and flashbacks. They often choose to avoid these thoughts and feelings, as well as the people and places associated with the event.
When these emotions are overwhelming, they can be challenging to control and process.
Repressing emotions can eventually take a mental and physical toll on the body and lead to anxiety, depression, stress-related illnesses, and alcohol/substance abuse.

This is why processing emotions is vital and can significantly improve mental health by promoting self-awareness, reducing stress, enhancing emotional regulation, and fostering healthier coping mechanisms.

Some effective ways to manage emotions include:
☛ Acupuncture - Relaxes the sympathetic nervous system which helps relieve anxiety, frustration, and anger
☛ Mindfulness exercises/Vagus nerve breathing
☛ Guidance from a therapist who specializes in helping people cope with traumas

Seeking support from family and friends whom you trust is always beneficial for coping after a traumatic event.
It’s also important to speak to your P*P, especially if you don’t feel like you are getting better.

The topics we discuss during Mental Health Awareness month help people recognize the different ways mental illness impacts their lives, while illustrating useful strategies and services, such as acupuncture.🌟

Social phobia, officially recognized in the DSM-5 as Social Anxiety Disorder, is a form of anxiety that gets minimized and often goes undiagnosed.
It’s characterized by an intense, persistent fear of social situations where an individual may experience feelings of intense self-consciousness, fear of judgment, or humiliation by others.
They often engage in avoidance behaviors, limiting social situations where their anxiety might be triggered.

People with this condition often find themselves in a constant state of hyper-vigilance and find it nearly impossible to truly relax.
When the nervous system remains overactivated, the person might appear as irritable or impatient.
Over time, this leads to burnout, exhaustion, and a diminished quality of life.

Acupuncture is very grounding. It's effective for managing and improving both the physical and psychological symptoms of this condition including:
☛ Persistent muscle tension/jaw clenching/neck pain
☛ Frequent headaches
☛ Insomnia/disrupted sleep patterns
☛ Acute symptoms including nausea/excessive sweating/shakiness

Welcome May...and the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month!

Let's utilize this time to encourage ways to break down barriers and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.
We can all educate the public about useful services such as acupuncture, and highlight businesses that provide safe spaces to those who are seeking connection and support for treating mental/emotional conditions including:
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Mood Disorders
• Grieving Issues
• PTSD

Talking openly about mental health with friends, family, or colleagues is a powerful initiative for building understanding and will help people feel less alone.

How will you support mental health in your community?🌞

When it comes to staying healthy and fighting off disease or illness, your immune system is the most important part of your body. It works by detecting harmful pathogens and viruses and protects your body against them.
When the immune system is not running properly, the body becomes more susceptible to illness.
Whether it’s from being overworked or even due to chronic allergies weakening the body’s immune response, we are always looking for ways to improve our overall health and wellbeing.

Below are tips to improve and strengthen immune function to help keep the body in its best shape and fight off illness.

◆ ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture works by bringing the body back into balance and increasing blood and energy flow. It has been shown to increase the white blood cell count in the body and stimulate the immune system.
◆ EXERCISE
Exercise is good for the body and mind in just about every way, one of them being immune health. Moderate exercise promotes circulation and blood flow, which keeps the body’s cells moving and working.
Try adding just 20 minutes of exercise to your daily routine.
◆ REDUCE STRESS
Emotional stress can cause the body to become more susceptible to illness. In addition to acupuncture, other ways to reduce stress include meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises.

By addressing the body as a whole, techniques such as acupuncture are used to bring the body back to its normal balance, which results in a healthy immune system.☀️

So many of us don’t breathe correctly, and shallow breathing is a major factor that contributes to those anxious sensations. It revs up the sympathetic nervous system, increases the heart rate, and makes us feel uneasy.
One way to switch your nervous system out of fight-or-flight mode is to inhale through your nose and extend the exhale through your mouth.
Try this:
☛ Inhale slowly through your nose for four seconds and pause briefly.
☛ Now exhale through your mouth for 8-10 seconds.
☛ Repeat for 2-5 minutes.

I’ve found this Komuso device to be extremely helpful. It hangs around your neck, providing a constant reminder to breathe and remain focused. Many find it to be an effective tool for when they know they are going to head into an anxious or stressful situation.
⚠︎ It's not a v**e pen.
⚠︎ It's not a whistle.
⚠︎ It simply slows your exhale and turns the stress response off.

Part of my lifestyle recommendations include instructing the proper ways of breathing.

As tree and grass pollen emerge in April, we are all too familiar with those annoying allergy signs.
Millions of Americans head to the drug store for antihistamines that don’t target specific allergic reactions and can be largely ineffective, only masking the symptoms.
Acupuncture helps strengthen both the respiratory system and the immune system. It not only makes it more difficult for allergens to attack the body, but it can also decrease the inflammatory response in your body that occurs when an allergen is encountered.
Various studies confirmed that acupuncture significantly lowers the antibody known as immunoglobulin E (IgE), associated with allergies and hypersensitivities. It stimulates blood flow, which carries oxygen to every cell in the body. The increased blood flow boosts the immune system, dilates the bronchioles, and produces anti-inflammatory agents that help improve breathing by relaxing the muscles.
Here are other natural ways to boost your immune system, relieve allergy sniffles and sneezes, and reduce your reliance on over-the-counter medications:
1) Nasal Moisturizers - Saline nasal sprays contain a mixture of water and salt. They are designed to lubricate and flush out nasal passages, relieving nasal dryness, nosebleeds and congestion associated with seasonal allergies. Unlike other nasal steroid sprays, saline sprays don't contain medication and can be used regularly.
2) Supplements and Herbs - There are numerous individual and combination products that address seasonal allergies by reducing symptoms and strengthening the immune system.
3) Tissues - When you're blowing your nose frequently, ensure that your tissues are extra soft --- it can really make a big difference.
4) Intermittent Fasting - Improves metabolism, decreases cytokines, and reduces inflammation.

A comprehensive plan that includes acupuncture treatments along with lifestyle and dietary changes will yield the best results when it comes to combating allergies!
