Axillary cording (also known as axillary web syndrome) is an under-discussed but widely common condition that can develop weeks, months or even years after lymph node removal or breast cancer-related surgery. People often describe these as guitar strings 🎸

What is it? 🤔 Research is still trying to understand exactly why cording happens. We do know the cords act like scar tissue which can impair shoulder and elbow mobility, leaving a sense of tightness or pulling. The cording can be tender or even painful. This can become more complicated when an individual receives radiation which is known to cause soft tissue hardening in and of itself.

Cording is most commonly found in the armpit (or axilla) but can be found all the way into the forearm or hand. There may be 1 large cord or multiple smaller cards. It is possible to have lymphedema in combination with cording.

Alaina Akey is a Doctor of Occupational Therapy and Certified Lymphedema Therapist who is passionate about helping individuals improve their function, independence, and overall quality of life. With experience in rural healthcare across a variety of clinical settings, she has worked with diverse patient populations and a wide range of diagnoses.

Alaina takes a holistic, patient-centered approach to care, recognizing how the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, and mental well-being impacts participation in daily life. She currently specializes in lymphedema management, using evidence-based interventions and individualized treatment strategies to help patients manage symptoms, improve function, and achieve their personal goals. She is committed to empowering each patient with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to more fully participate in activities meaningful to them.
