Not too long ago I got to spend time alongside a small group of men going through a very difficult season. Trauma, addiction, family falling apart, and more. It’s a blessing to witness someone make the decision to commit to transforming their life.
A friend of mine put it this way: “You’ll stop getting your ass kicked when you get tired of getting your ass kicked.”
No one can make another person walk a different path. It took me a long time to recognize that.
What shocked me about these men is that deep down, they already knew what needed to change. I didn’t need to give them anything. The only thing I could offer was my presence. Just be there. Walk alongside them.
That’s what a mountain does too. It doesn’t argue with you or explain itself. It just sits there while you decide whether you’re going to take the step. The trail doesn’t care how long you stand at the bottom weighing it out.
That group was the extreme end of things, but I think we all know what we need to do. It’s just a matter of acting on it.
Most people wait until the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of changing. Why wait until it gets that heavy?
Take the step.
