Not all rehab is created equal because not all athletes move, compete, or recover the same way.

At ATR Sports Medicine, we believe return-to-play decisions should be based on measurable criteria measurable data, functional movement, and the actual demands of an athlete’s sport ...not just timelines or symptom relief.

That means looking at strength, control, movement quality, confidence, and performance readiness before an athlete steps back onto the field or court.
Rehab should prepare athletes for the reality of competition.

Why does sport-specific injury management matter?

This athlete injured his elbow during the last game of football season. Even though he would have been cleared for spring football, the same injury requires a different return to play process for a baseball pitcher. The injury didn’t require surgery, but it’s still a long recovery process focused on restoring range of motion, strength, stability, and coordination throughout the entire throwing system. The good news is that after all of his hard work, he was able to get back on the mound and help his team during baseball playoffs!

One of the most important components of UCL rehab is ensuring the elbow has a stable base from which to work. Without a strong core and stable shoulder blade, extra stress is transferred down the kinetic chain, and it’s often the shoulder or elbow that pay the price.

That’s why so much of rehab for overhead athletes goes far beyond the elbow itself. The goal is building a more efficient, stable, and resilient athlete from the ground up.

Athletes of all ages and skill levels are taught to push through discomfort.

Sometimes they've dealt with the same minor problem for so long that they learn to just ignore it.
But the biggest challenge of all isn't based on physical toughness alone-- it's knowing how hard to push without increasing your risk of a more significant injury.

A small issue that gets ignored often creates larger problems over time....decreased mobility, altered mechanics, reduced strength, and eventually injuries that require far more recovery than early intervention would have.

At ATR Sports Medicine, we believe in addressing issues early, identifying root causes, and helping athletes stay confident throughout their season.

Being proactive is part of performance.

Every recovery process does not have to look the same to still be effective. In fact, we think the opposite is true.

One of the things we work hard to do at ATR Sports Medicine is create rehab plans that fit the actual needs, goals, and lifestyle of the athlete or active adult.

This athlete is a former professional soccer player who has been dealing with on-going knee pain following multiple ACL surgeries before seeking care at ATR. While he still enjoys playing recreationally, his current season of life as a PhD student at Texas A&M University means his schedule is demanding and his time is limited.

After his evaluation, we built a more independent rehab plan that allows him to work around his schedule while still making meaningful progress. We meet about every two weeks to reassess, progress exercises, make adjustments, and ensure he’s continuing to move in the right direction between visits.

Not every athlete needs the same frequency of care, the same timeline, or the same approach. The key is having a plan that is intentional, realistic, and built around long-term function and consistency.

While dry needling can be extremely helpful in a number of ways, it’s often misunderstood because it rarely works as a standalone fix. The goal should always be to pair dry needling with intentional movement and therapeutic exercise so changes actually transfer into real-life activity and performance.

When used appropriately and integrated into a full rehab plan, dry needling can be a valuable part of helping athletes and active adults move and recover more effectively.

One of the biggest responsibilities in sports medicine is helping athletes return safely and helping parents feel confident in that process too.

At ATR Sports Medicine, we take a full-picture approach to care. That means looking beyond the immediate injury to understand movement patterns, contributing factors, strength deficits, recovery readiness, and what it truly takes to return to sport safely and confidently.

We believe athletes deserve more than quick answers or generic rehab plans.
We’re incredibly grateful for families who trust us with their athletes and their recovery journey.

Hi, name is Dan Jacobi. I own and operate ATR Sports Medicine, which is based out of in College Station, Texas.

I’ve been fortunate to spend more than 15 years working in collegiate athletics and sports medicine, learning from incredible mentors, coaches, physicians, colleagues, and athletes along the way. Every stop in my career taught me something different, and each experience helped shape the way I approach patient care today.

The reality is that none of us develop our skills in isolation. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside people who challenged me to think differently, pushed me to grow professionally, and demonstrated what it means to put athletes and patients first. Those lessons continue to influence the care we provide every day at ATR.

When I opened this practice, my goal wasn’t to recreate the collegiate setting...it was to bring the same level of attention, professionalism, and individualized care to the Bryan-College Station community. Whether you're a competitive athlete, a weekend warrior, or simply someone who wants to move better and feel better, you deserve a plan that is built around your specific goals and needs.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted us with your care, supported our growth, and helped make ATR Sports Medicine what it is today. We’re grateful to be part of this community, and we look forward to continuing to serve you.

Pain-free does not always mean risk-free.

One of the biggest mistakes athletes make is returning to activity simply because symptoms have calmed down. But true recovery is about more than pain levels... it’s about strength, stability, movement quality, tissue tolerance, and whether the body is actually prepared for the demands being placed on it again.

At ATR Sports Medicine, we focus on objective progressions and return-to-play standards that help reduce the risk of re-injury instead of simply masking symptoms long enough to get back out there.

The goal is long-term performance, not temporary relief.

A knee injury affects more than the knee…it changes movement, stability, strength, and confidence.

For this Texas A&M student and former rodeo athlete, the goal before summer was building strength and stability that translates to real movement and performance.

At ATR, we train the body as a system, helping athletes move better, feel stronger, and build long-term resilience.

Every exercise has a purpose.

If you’re dealing with a knee injury or looking to improve strength and stability, schedule an evaluation today to build a plan that fits your goals.

The difference in care is something you can feel.

At ATR Sports Medicine, we believe people deserve honest answers, thorough evaluations, and a plan that actually helps them move forward ... not a rushed appointment or a one-size-fits-all solution.

One of the things we value most is helping patients understand why pain is happening, what’s contributing to it, and how to address it long term. Because lasting progress starts with education, trust, and intentional care.

We’re grateful for patients like Amy who trust us with their recovery journey.
