What we KNOW vs what we BELIEVE

We can KNOW something intellectually through information and memorization, yet BELIEVE something entirely different as demonstrated by our choices and actions. In many cases, our behaviors reveal our deepest beliefs more accurately than our words.

From both a psychological and Christian perspective, transformation is not merely about acquiring information—it is about living in obedience to truth. Scripture consistently portrays faith as trust expressed through obedience, not simply intellectual agreement (see James 2:17, John 14:15, and Matthew 7:24–27). Likewise, lasting renewal comes as our minds are transformed and our lives increasingly conform to what is true (Romans 12:2).

Many people wait until they “feel motivated” before engaging in meaningful activities. Often, it works the other way around.

Whether it’s serving others, spending time outdoors, creating something, exercising, connecting with family, or growing in your faith, meaningful activities help provide purpose, direction, and resilience during difficult seasons.

From a therapeutic perspective, what we do has a powerful influence on how we think and feel. Choosing to engage in activities that align with our values and desires—regardless of how we feel in the moment—can help shift mood, challenge unhelpful thoughts, and build momentum over time.

From a Christian perspective, we are called to live by faith and walk in obedience and faithfulness even when our feelings don’t align with our values, trusting God, who is at work in us, as we walk in steady obedience and faithfulness.

Feelings are real, but they are not a reliable guide. We can acknowledge them without letting them lead us, choosing instead actions grounded in truth and aligned with who we want to be.

We all have thoughts—some are intentional, many are automatic.

Some reflect what we truly believe, and some absolutely do not. Thoughts are not automatically factual, truthful, or evidence. They can be shaped by fear, stress, insecurity, habits, or past experiences.

Awareness matters. When we learn to notice what we think, we can choose which thoughts to challenge, replace, and give our attention to instead of automatically buying into or believing every thought that enters our mind.

What we give our attention to shapes our thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and even our relationships.
In counseling, attention matters because awareness creates opportunity for change. The mind moves toward whatever it repeatedly focuses on — whether fear, shame, stress, hope, or gratitude (life or death).
Learning to intentionally direct our attention is an important part of emotional health, growth, and resilience. What we practice paying attention becomes the direction our mind and life begin to follow.

Self-awareness is more than “knowing yourself” — it’s learning to recognize how your thoughts, emotions, actions, and experiences influence the way you respond to life and relationships.

The more aware we become of our patterns, triggers, and emotional responses, the more intentional we can be in how we communicate, feel, and grow. Self-awareness can help improve emotional regulation, relationships, confidence, and overall mental wellness.

Growth often starts with simply slowing down long enough to notice what’s happening internally.

Self-awareness is the starting point of meaningful change.

Self-awareness isn’t about overanalyzing yourself.
It’s about learning to observe what’s happening within you — without judgment or avoidance.

Emotions aren’t good or bad. We just like some and don't like others. They provide information and feedback.

When you notice what you’re feeling, what triggers it, and how it influences your behavior, you gain something powerful:
choice.

Scripture reminds us:
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
— Proverbs 4:23

Self-awareness helps us guard the heart well.
It moves us from reacting on autopilot to responding with wisdom, responsibility, and intention. And it’s a skill that can be practiced!
So practice these strategies to see what you are able to notice about yourself and start making more intentional choices toward where you REALLY want to be going.

🧠 Prove It.

Your mind is full of thoughts every day.
Some are helpful.
Some are not.

But here’s the question:
What’s the evidence?

Not feelings.
Not assumptions.
Not opinions.
Actual evidence.

🔍 Test the thought. Prove it.
Just because a thought feels true doesn’t mean it is.
We have both the freedom and the responsibility to test our thoughts — and bring them into alignment with truth.

“We take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 10:5

Ask:

What’s the evidence this thought is true?
What facts contradict it?
Am I seeing the full picture — or just the worst part?
Is this belief helping me move forward?
What does God’s Word (Truth) say about this?

We are not at the mercy of our thoughts.
We can challenge them, reshape them, and choose what we focus on.

Not every thought is true.
Not every belief is helpful.
And not every emotion reflects reality.

But when we slow down and examine the story we’re telling ourselves — that’s when change begins.

🧠 “Be Your Authentic Self” — But What Does That Actually Mean?

You’ve heard it:
“Be authentic.” “Speak your truth.”
It sounds empowering — but often leaves people confused and stuck.

🔹 Truth isn’t something we each get to define.
Our feelings are real, but they aren’t always right.
Authenticity isn’t about following every emotion — it’s about living in alignment with what’s actually true.

And truth isn’t just about facts.
It’s about identity — who you are, who you were made to be.

You don’t have to create your identity — you were given one.
You’re made in God’s image — known, loved, and called with purpose.
Your value isn’t something you earn — it’s something you already have.

Your authentic self includes the parts you like and the parts God is still refining.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2

Real authenticity takes awareness, humility, and grounding in God’s truth, not cultural trends or shifting emotions.

In times like these, words often fall short.

Tragedy shakes our sense of safety.
Grief shows up in unexpected ways — sadness, fear, anger, numbness.
And healing? It’s not a straight line. It’s slow, personal, and layered.

If you’re feeling heavy right now, here’s your reminder:

You don’t have to process this alone.
It’s okay to feel what you feel — even if it doesn’t make sense.
There’s no “right” way to grieve.
You can pause. You can breathe. You can talk.
