The Long Game | Episode 3: The Invisible Threat

Most people have never heard of sarcopenia. But after years of practicing orthopedic surgery I can tell you it’s one of the most underappreciated threats to how well you age.

Starting in your 40s your body begins losing muscle mass at a rate of 3 to 5 percent per decade. Without intervention that accelerates. And the downstream effects — weakened joints, loss of stability, reduced mobility — are exactly what I see playing out in my OR every week.

The primary weapon against it is protein. But protein doesn’t work in isolation. It works alongside the other macronutrients — carbohydrates that fuel your training and recovery, healthy fats that support joint lubrication and inflammation control. Getting the balance right matters as much as the protein itself.

I’ll be going deeper on all of this in upcoming episodes. But here’s where I start — roughly 200 grams of protein daily, spread throughout the day in real food and supplements, within a total calorie target of around 2000 to 2500 calories.

Consistency over perfection. Every single day.

Your muscle is an investment. Start funding it today.

The Long Game | Episode 2: What You Carry

Here’s what nobody tells you about joint pain.

It rarely happens all at once. It’s the result of decades of load — step after step, year after year — slowly wearing down a joint that was never designed to carry more than it should.
I see patients every week who are surprised by where they ended up. But the math was always there. Silent. Compounding.

The good news is that math works both ways. Every intentional decision you make about your body today is a deposit into your joint health decades from now. Not perfection — just consistency.

That’s what this series is about. The daily decisions that determine how you move and how fully you live for the rest of your life.

This is The Long Game. And it starts with understanding what you carry.

Most people don’t think about their joints until they can’t ignore them anymore. By then we’ve already lost years we didn’t have to.

I’ve spent my career operating on joints. And what I’ve learned is that the decisions we make about how we move, what we eat, and how we live have an enormous impact on how we feel at 70, 80 and beyond.

Joint health isn’t just about avoiding surgery. It’s the foundation of everything — how you move, how you sleep, how you show up for the people you love.

This is The Long Game. A series about the daily choices that determine the quality of the rest of your life.

Episode 1 drops now. Follow along — this one’s for the long haul.

Fear of the unknown is one of the biggest barriers keeping people from a decision that could change the rest of their life.

Joint replacement is a serious procedure with real risks. I never want anyone walking into this lightly. That’s not what this is about.

But I’ve sat across from too many patients who waited years — not because their joint wasn’t ready, but because fear won. And what that fear cost them wasn’t just time. It was birthdays, trips, mornings without pain, moments they’ll never get back.

My goal has never been a perfect X-ray or a textbook rehab plan. My goal is getting you back to your life.

If fear is the only thing standing between you and that — this is your sign to have the conversation.

Every patient I’ve ever operated on adjusted their life around their pain before they ever walked through my door.

They stopped hiking. Stopped traveling. Stopped getting on the floor with their grandkids. Not all at once — gradually, quietly, until it just became their normal.

The hardest part of my job isn’t the surgery. It’s sitting across from someone who has been living like that for years and realizing they didn’t have to.

If something has been slowly taking things from you — don’t wait until there’s nothing left to get back.

A patient sent me this after taking his family to see Ronaldo play in the World Cup 🇵🇹⚽️

Not long after joint replacement surgery, he carried his 3-year-old on his shoulders — two miles, Houston heat, up and down stadium stairs.

“AND no pain.”

This is the whole point. Not the surgery — this. Grateful for moments like this. 🙏

Advancements in surgical techniques and care protocols have made outpatient joint replacement possible for many patients.

Outpatient joint replacement allows qualified patients to go home the same day as surgery, reducing exposure to infection risk, improving comfort, and helping support a faster return to everyday life.

If the idea of a hospital stay has been a concern, there may be a better option available for you! Give Dr. Toy a call to schedule a consultation.

For many people, the best moments are the quiet ones — like time spent in the garden.

When joint pain starts to interfere with those routines, it can feel like you’re losing more than just comfort. Getting to the root of the problem can help you move better and enjoy those moments again.

Call Dr. Toy at 901-861-9610 to schedule your consultation.

🙏 Grateful doesn’t even cover it.

There were moments I didn’t know how the story was going to go. But God did.

To every patient who trusted me with their care — thank you.

To God — all the glory.

If you’re walking through something hard right now, I hope this reminds you: stay faithful in the waiting — He’s working even when you can’t see it. 🙏
