Today marks the 39th anniversary of the Line of Duty Death of Lieutenant Arthur “Art” Vincent.
This morning, members of the Town of Canton Fire & EMS and members of the community, gathered at the Canton Fire & EMS Memorial Garden for a wreath-laying ceremony to honor Lt. Vincent’s life, service, and ultimate sacrifice.
Thirty-nine years ago today, Arthur “Art” Vincent gave his life in the line of duty while serving the Town of Canton as a Fire Police Lieutenant. He dedicated his life to serving both his country and the Town of Canton with honor, integrity, and unwavering commitment.
His sacrifice serves as a lasting reminder of the courage, dedication, and selfless service demonstrated by the members of our department every day.
Today, and always, we honor the memory of Lt. Arthur Vincent. We will never forget his sacrifice.

The Town of Canton Fire & EMS invites the community to join us as we honor the life and sacrifice of Fire Police Lieutenant Arthur “Art” Vincent on the 39th anniversary of his Line of Duty Death.

As we celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary, we’re also proud to celebrate 30 years of serving the Town of Canton.

For three decades, our department has been built on the dedication of our volunteer firefighters, EMTs, Fire Police and paramedics who have answered the call at all hours to protect our community. Their dedication continues to make Canton a safer place to live, work, and visit.

The Town of Canton Fire & EMS is proud to announce the addition of a LUCAS 3 Chest Compression System to our fire division. This life-saving device was purchased through Connecticut Opioid Settlement Funding, allowing the department to further enhance the level of emergency medical care we provide to our community.

The LUCAS 3 delivers consistent, high-quality chest compressions during cardiac arrest, helping maintain blood flow while allowing first responders to safely perform other critical, lifesaving interventions. It also improves provider safety by reducing responder fatigue, enabling our firefighters and paramedics to focus on advanced patient care during both transport and on-scene operations.

This equipment is another example of our ongoing commitment to providing our members with the latest technology and tools to improve patient outcomes and deliver the highest level of emergency medical care possible.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Town of Canton Board of Selectmen for approving the use of Opioid Settlement Funding to purchase this much-needed piece of lifesaving equipment. Their support allows us to continue investing in resources that directly benefit the residents and visitors of our community.

As we have reached the halfway point of 2026, the Town of Canton Fire & EMS has already responded to 917 emergency calls for service.
To put that into perspective, just 10 years ago, in 2016, our department responded to 1,331 emergency calls during the entire year. That same year also marked a significant milestone as the department transitioned to paramedic-level EMS staffing. Since then, the Town of Canton has experienced substantial growth, resulting in a dramatic increase in the demand for emergency services. At this point in 2026, we have already handled nearly 70% of the total calls we responded to in all of 2016.
Over the past 30 years, the Town of Canton Fire & EMS has seen tremendous growth in both our community and the number of emergency calls we respond to.
This continued growth reflects the dedication and hard work of our volunteer firefighters and EMTs, daytime fire staff, and paramedics who answer the call whenever our community needs them. Their professionalism, training, and commitment ensure that residents and visitors of Canton receive exceptional emergency services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
As emergency call volume continues to rise, it reinforces the importance of maintaining a well-trained, properly equipped, and adequately staffed department to meet the growing needs of our community.

As we celebrate Independence Day, the Town of Canton Fire & EMS reminds everyone to celebrate safely and responsibly.

In Connecticut, if it explodes or leaves the ground, it’s illegal. Illegal fireworks cause house fires, brush fires, serious injuries, and unnecessary emergency responses every year.

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave them to licensed professionals and attend a public display.

Help us keep our firefighters, EMS personnel, and our community safe this holiday.

Last evening, members of the Town of Canton Fire & EMS took advantage of the warm weather to get our rescue boat back on the water for river rescue training on the Farmington River.

The drill focused on boat operations, victim removal from the water, and rescue coordination, while also providing valuable hands-on experience for some of our newer members.

When most people think of the fire service, they think of fighting fires. However, today’s firefighters and EMS providers must be prepared for a wide variety of emergencies, including water rescues, technical rescues, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and more. Our dedicated members continually train to maintain these specialized skills and ensure they are ready to respond whenever our community needs them.

With increased recreational activity on the river during the summer months, training like this helps ensure our personnel remain prepared to respond quickly, safely, and effectively to water emergencies. The countless hours our members dedicate to training behind the scenes are all part of our commitment to keeping the residents and visitors of Canton safe.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. this morning, Canton Fire & EMS, along with the Canton Police Department, were dispatched to Windmill Lane for a reported fire involving a sanitation truck.

Upon arrival, firefighters determined that it was not the contents of the truck that were burning, but the vehicle itself. The driver then advised crews that the truck was powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) and that the gas line was involved in the fire.

Due to the lack of fire hydrants in the North Canton area, an additional tanker from the Barkhamsted East Fire Department was requested to assist with water supply operations. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) was also notified.

Thanks to the rapid response of our daytime fire staff and volunteer firefighters, water was quickly applied to the fire, allowing crews to contain the incident and prevent further complications.

Incidents such as this highlight the tremendous value and importance of both our dedicated volunteer firefighters and our daytime paid firefighter program. Their combined efforts continue to provide exceptional protection and service to the residents and visitors of the Town of Canton. cost-effective protection for Canton residents. Simply put, they are worth every penny invested by the taxpayer.

Last Friday night, the Town of Canton Fire & EMS participated in the Cherrybrook School PTO Children’s Fair. The event provided an opportunity for children to explore a fire truck and meet members of the department.

While the fair was underway, crews from the Town of Canton Fire & EMS, along with the Canton Police Department, were dispatched to Canton Springs Road for a unique rescue call baby ducks in need of rescue from a storm drain.
