For years, Black Forest retiree Jean missed something simple: walking barefoot.

After a minor foot injury in 2018 turned into a serious infection, Jean endured multiple surgeries, long recoveries and lasting foot pain. She was grateful to be alive and to still have her foot, but walking comfortably — especially without padded shoes — felt out of reach.

Later, after receiving knee replacements, Jean mentioned her ongoing foot pain. She was referred her to Michael Simpson, MD, who talked through her options without pressure.

“He gave several options … and he did not push towards anything, which I really appreciated,” Jean shared.

In December 2023, Jean had foot revision surgery with Dr. Simpson. The result was more comfort, better mobility and a return to one of her favorite summer freedoms.

“Just because I’m getting older doesn’t mean I should have to wear big clunky shoes all the time,” Jean said. “It’s been very freeing.”

Now retired in Black Forest, Jean says HCA HealthONE Colorado Orthopedic Specialists will continue to be her go-to team.

“You really just don’t appreciate how much you walk until you can’t do it.”

Hip pain that pinches when you squat, sit, climb stairs or get in and out of the car may be more than tight muscles.
