It’s a really important part of my practice to create as much space and encouragement as I can for parents to be the first hands to touch their baby.

In the sacred valley of Peru, traditional Andean midwives believe that as a baby is crowing and being born all of their chakras are open. They have so much reverence for this process that they intentionally do not touch vulvas or baby’s heads.

Intuitively I’ve always desired not to touch, but being given language and meaning for what I was feeling was so grounding.

One of the many benefits to creating a relationship with your midwife, and knowing who will be at your birth, is that if a baby is asking for help to be born a midwife’s hands are far from strangers hands. And I hold deeply the honor and sacred responsibility to receive a families baby. This is part of the work that’s called upon sometimes.

But the work is also creating space within myself to know the difference, and offer every possibility for babies first touch in this world to be skin on skin, because it does matter.

Not just for the baby but for the mother and the father. My mentor and teacher, Whapio, talks about the spiritual and transformational significance of fathers catching their babies or as she calls it “receiving their light” and how she has watched that act make them better more attentive and loving fathers.

I whole heartedly believe this to be true. We have turned catching babies into this unobtainable medical procedure, qualified by only a select few. When truly there is nobody more qualified, in a healthy and normal birth, than the parents to receive their own creation.

This an entire rite of passage that at the very least deserves enough reverence to be offered and then protected as much as possible. For many of us birth workers that protection includes our own inner work to constantly reevaluate is this touch necessary?

There simply, for myself, is so no greater joy than to witness two beings come together in love, step up, and choose to receive their own light ✨💜

Love full 🌕🌕moon babies!
This sweet boy really made his mom work for it! Always such a joy to see the look of shock and awe on mothers face once they cross that threshold of uncertainty and are then holding baby in arms 💙💙

Physically, humans don’t birth any different than most mammals.

What causes us so much trauma and fear around birth is our mind.

Our ability to create stories and over-think.

When I recommend child birth education to mothers I tell them, this isn’t education so that you will know and then be able to do.

Your body already knows how to birth and it doesn’t need to be taught.

But the connection between mind and body is so strong. And if we believe we can or can’t do something strong enough, our bodies will too.

Often the fear of something is worse than the thing itself.

I recommend childbirth education because, reclaiming our own body literacy around child birth is important, but mostly it’s for our minds to know so then it can relax and get out of the way.

Modern mind wants to know so much so we can anticipate and get ahead of the next move. Avoid unpleasant surprises and pitfalls.

But birth is not that way.

Birth is quite literally a spiral and vortex of winding and unwinding until full surrender to the unknown.

This is really uncomfortable territory for the mind that seeks comfort in knowing.

That resistance creates more fear and more fear creates tensions and more tension creates more pain.

I often find that my most important role in your birth space is the holding.

It’s an invisible doing. An energetic container of reminding you, by witnessing rather than coaching, that you can in fact do this.

Most of the time, that’s all mothers really need in a midwife.

A hand as they cross the threshold.

Yes, sometimes it’s also more than that.

But most of the time it isn’t. And that’s why who you choose to support you in birth matters.

How you feel matters in how you surrender, or don’t surrender.

Crossing the threshold is only something you can do, but how you are held matters in how you will cross.

There will be moments you will wonder if you can do it, you will question if you’ll survive - that’s Birth.

It’s not inherently flawed and dangerous, it’s a rite of passage and initiation into no longer fearing your own nature.
