🧠 ADHD “Traits” vs ADHD Disorder (Clinical Distinction)

🧩 ADHD Traits (Subclinical)
These are common in the general population:

~Occasional distractibility
~Procrastination
~Forgetfulness
~Daydreaming
~Emotional sensitivity

➡️ Traits do not cause significant impairment in multiple domains.

🧩 ADHD Disorder (Diagnosis)
DSM-5 requires:

~Symptoms present before age 12.
~Present in ≥2 settings (work, school, home).
~Cause clinically significant impairment.
~Not better explained by another condition.

👉 The key difference is pervasive impairment, not just personality style.

🧠 ADHD in Women: Signs, Symptoms, and Differential Diagnosis

🌸 Why ADHD in Women Is Often Missed

Historically, ADHD research focused on boys with hyperactive behavior. Women are more likely to have inattentive and internalized symptoms, leading to underdiagnosis or misdiagnosis as anxiety or depression.

Peer-reviewed data show ADHD is frequently unrecognized in women presenting with mood or anxiety disorders; in one clinical sample, ~19.6% of women had ADHD, and nearly half were previously undiagnosed.

✅ Core ADHD Symptoms in Women (DSM-5 Domains)

🧩 1) Inattention / Executive Dysfunction
~Difficulty sustaining attention
~Easily distracted
~Poor organization and time management
~Forgetfulness (appointments, tasks)
~Difficulty completing tasks
~Procrastination and task avoidance

➡️ These symptoms often persist from childhood and impair academic, occupational, or social functioning.

⚡ 2) Hyperactivity / Impulsivity (Often Internalized)
Women often have less outward hyperactivity and more internal restlessness:
~Racing thoughts
~Feeling mentally “on edge”
~Excessive talking or interrupting
~Impulsive decisions (spending, over-committing)

~Rapid mood shifts
~Low frustration tolerance
~Rejection sensitivity
~Chronic shame or low self-esteem

These are frequently reported in women with ADHD and contribute to misdiagnosis.
