A lot of people out there are non-verbal, and using sign language is a good way to help them learn to communicate. The American Sign Language alphabet is a good place to start, and using the famous alphabet song along with the letters helps to support the learning of the letters. In addition to building communication skills, knowing ASL helps work on finger dexterity and memory. (Photo Credit: Teach Beside Me)

August is National Wellness Month! We offer wellness services, but it's also something you can do on your own. Here are some suggestions for musical wellness activities you can do:
* Create playlists of your favorite songs and share them. This can be done on Spotify, YouTube, or any number of other streaming platforms.
* Listen to your favorite music, or take the opportunity to seek out new favorites.
* Learn an instrument. It doesn't have to be a big complicated one - it could be the kazoo.
* Attend a concert. Check your local events calendars - many free concerts happen all the time, particularly in the summer.
* Dance! Express yourself through movement.
These are just a few suggestions. There are many things you can do to practice wellness. Just take time to take care of yourself.

Oral Motor and Respiratory Exercises (OMREX)â„¢ is a NMTâ„¢ technique where wind instruments and vocalization exercises are used to increase control of articulation and respiratory strength. These in turn contribute to the development of the muscles needed for speech. In music therapy, this translates to doing different singing exercises, as well as playing instruments such as the harmonica, the melodica, the recorder, the slide whistle, and the kazoo. All can be a lot of fun and provide auditory feedback for the work the individual is doing.

In music therapy, when we look at lyrics, we frequently think more about the underlying meanings than simply taking the lyrics at face value. Which is good, because taking songs literally can often make for a strange experience.

Music therapists are highly trained musicians. We have to complete a degree program that courses in music theory, music history, instrumental proficiencies, sciences, psychology, and many others. Also, once all the coursework is done, there's a 1200 hour internship that must be completed, board certification to be acquired, and 100 hours of continuing education every five years. We also have to be trained in the different specializations we may use (such as Neurologic Music Therapy® here at NeuroRhythm). But one of the great things about music therapy is that you don't have to have any musical training to start. We believe anyone can benefit from music, and we're more than happy to share what we know and love!

There is a difference between music therapy and music lessons, but the two can overlap. Adapted music lessons can be used to help individuals learn how to play different instruments, but also address other goals such as cognitive development and fine motor control.
