In today’s episode of type 2 wellness:
Your nervous system needs more than a massage. Sometimes it needs you to go outside.
This weekend, “outside” happened to be 14,196 feet on Mt. Yale. But regulating your nervous system doesn’t require climbing a mountain.
Time outdoors—especially when paired with movement—can help reduce perceived stress, improve mood and attention, and give your brain a break from the constant stream of stimulation we live in every day.
And I think there’s an important connection to bodywork here.
When we’re chronically stressed, we often see it show up physically: guarded muscles, shallow breathing, clenched jaws, elevated shoulders, poor sleep, and that general feeling of never quite being able to turn off.
Massage can provide an environment where your body gets an opportunity to downshift. But what you do between appointments matters too.
Walk the dog.
Sit outside with your coffee.
Take the trail.
Garden.
Feel the sun on your face.
Put your phone away for twenty minutes.
You don’t have to summit a 14er.
Sometimes your nervous system just needs you to go touch grass. 🤘🏼(Mine just happens to prefer its wellness with 4,000 feet of elevation gain and a questionable amount of Type 2 fun.⛰️)
