Colorado Springs, many of you are seeing and smelling the smoke from the Aspen Acres Fire burning to our south. It is a reminder of our own experience with wildfire, and brings back some of our darkest days.
These smoky skies are an important reminder. Wildfire is part of life in Colorado Springs. It is not a matter of if, but when. And the best thing we can do is prepare before an emergency reaches our doorstep. Our City continues to invest in wildfire mitigation, planning, training, and coordination with our local, regional, state, and federal partners. And as part of that commitment to partnership, Colorado Springs Fire Department has sent 13 firefighters to the Aspen Acres Fire and three firefighters to the Ferris Fire in Durango as part of our mutual aid response.
But community preparedness matters just as much. I encourage every household to remember Ready, Set, Go.
🟢 Ready: Create defensible space around your home, know your wildfire risk, and sign up for emergency alerts at PeakAlerts.org.
🟡 Set: Pack or refresh your go-bag, make a family evacuation plan, and be ready to leave if conditions change.
🔴 Go: If an evacuation is ordered, leave immediately. Every second matters, and leaving early helps keep you, your family, and our first responders safe.
Colorado Springs has faced devastating wildfires before. Those experiences have taught us that preparedness saves lives.
Let's use today's smoky skies as a reminder to prepare. Not out of fear, but out of responsibility to ourselves, our families, and our neighbors.
