Wellness Wednesday... for the dads.

June is Men's Mental Health Month, and we want to say this directly to the autism dads, BCBA dads, RBT dads, and uncles, grandfathers, and chosen-family dads in our community:

πŸ’™ Your mental health matters. Not just in service of being a better caregiver, but on its own.
πŸ’™ You don't have to be "the strong one." That's not a job description; it's a trap.
πŸ’™ Talking to someone about your kid's autism is not weakness. It's data-informed parenting.
πŸ’™ The cultural messaging that says "figure it out alone" is killing men. Literally.

Therapists exist. Support groups exist. We will help you find one if you want help finding one. Call us, (719) 466-4809.

Tip Tuesday: If you don't have a summer visual schedule on the fridge yet, this is your sign.

It doesn't need to be Pinterest-worthy. It needs to be honest.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Use real photos when possible: your kitchen, your park, your car
πŸ•˜ Anchor to the SAME 3 times daily: wake, lunch, dinner. Everything else can shift
πŸ” Build in a 'flex' block "choose 1" with 2-3 options. Choice reduces meltdowns
✏️ Update it together at breakfast. Pre-teaching the day is half the battle

And when the day falls apart anyway? That's data too. Adjust tomorrow.

Summer in Colorado is supposed to be the easy part of the year. Open windows, long evenings, neighborhood pools, and the kind of slow days that feel like a deep breath after a hard school year. But for families raising a child with autism β€” especially a child with significant sensory sensitivities

A love note to caregivers planning summer:

If you were exhausted in May, July will not be where you find your energy back.

Some moves to make this week:

πŸ—“οΈ Block 1 evening per week as YOURS. Now. On the calendar. Defended.
πŸ‘― Identify your 'easy' people β€” the friends who don't require explanations
πŸ’Ό Talk to your employer about flexibility BEFORE you need it
πŸ’† Schedule one self-care thing β€” therapy, massage, a hike β€” for July TODAY
🀝 Get on respite waitlists. They take time.

You can't pour from an empty cup. And summer is a long pour. πŸ’›

It's the last Saturday of May. Pools open for the season. β˜€οΈπŸŠβ™€οΈ

Quick reminder: For kids with autism, water is the #1 elopement-related danger. If you're heading to a pool this weekend:

πŸ›Ÿ USCG-approved life vest, every time β€” even if they 'can swim'
πŸ›Ÿ One designated water-watcher with NO phone
πŸ›Ÿ Don't trust pool noodles, floaties, or arm bands as safety devices
πŸ›Ÿ Wrist or ankle ID with emergency contact, especially in crowded settings

P.S. β€” If you haven't grabbed a Federal Drive summer spot yet, this week is the moment. They are filling.

What does adult ABA actually look like at Zebulon?

It looks like a 24-year-old learning to chop vegetables in a real kitchen β€” at his pace, with the right support, on the days he says yes.

It looks like a 31-year-old practicing laundry from sort to fold, then walking out to the garden when she's done.

It looks like a 22-year-old building communication for the first time on an AAC device, after years of nobody asking the right way.

It looks like a community outing every week, because a meaningful life isn't lived inside four walls.

Adult ABA isn't kids' ABA stretched longer. It's its own thing. Built for adults. Honoring the adults they are.

πŸ“ 1820 Zebulon Dr., Colorado Springs. Tricare accepted. Tours available.

Thursday team spotlight 🌟

Our BCBAs aren't just behavior analysts β€” they're partners who walk alongside families for years, sometimes decades. They are in IEP meetings. They are at birthday parties. They are texting back at 9pm because a transition is hard.

If you've worked with a CBLG BCBA who has changed the trajectory of your family β€” drop their name in the comments. We'll make sure they see it. πŸ’›

Wellness Wednesday β€” a hard but important one.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for autistic children who elope, and the months between Memorial Day and Labor Day are statistically the most dangerous.

If your child elopes β€” whether toward water or away from people β€” please:

πŸ›Ÿ Add door alarms and pool alarms NOW, before they're needed
πŸ›Ÿ Get on a waitlist for adaptive swim lessons (many start in early summer)
πŸ›Ÿ Look into Project Lifesaver or similar programs in your county
πŸ›Ÿ Tell EVERY caregiver β€” grandparents, sitters, camp staff β€” about the elopement risk explicitly

Sharing this isn't to scare anyone. It's because we love your family and want you to have a fun, safe summer. πŸ’™

Tip Tuesday: When behaviors escalate this summer, check the basics first.

Big behaviors in June and July often have a smaller, simpler driver hiding underneath. Before you assume it's emotional, check:

🌑️ Are they HOT? Heat dysregulates everyone β€” and faster for kids with sensory differences.
πŸ’§ Are they DEHYDRATED? Many kids on the spectrum don't reliably feel or report thirst.
😴 Is sleep off? Long daylight hours wreck routines β€” try blackout curtains.
🍽️ Has eating been weird? Hunger + summer = volatility.
πŸ“… Is the schedule unpredictable? Even 'fun' unpredictability can dysregulate.

Behavior is communication. In summer, sometimes it's communicating something as simple as "I'm overheated and I don't have the words."

πŸ’™ If summer behaviors are getting bigger than you can manage at home, talk to us. Federal Drive (school-age summer programming) and Parker (ages 16 and under) both have current openings.
