If you keep feeling pain in your face, forehead, cheek, or around your eye, it may be easy to assume it is coming from your sinuses.

But sometimes the pattern is more complicated.

Nerve pathways involving the neck can refer pain into areas that feel like sinus pressure or facial pain.

So if the same symptoms keep coming back, and sinus treatments have not fully solved the problem, the neck may be worth looking at.

Wait until you see where this nerve actually goes.

A lot of people feel pain in the face, forehead, cheek, or around the eye and assume it must be a sinus issue.

But sometimes that pain pattern may be connected to nerve pathways that involve the neck.

That’s why “sinus headaches” that keep coming back may be worth looking at differently — especially if sinus treatments haven’t fully solved the problem.

The location of the pain matters. But the source of the pain may be somewhere else.

And I thought I knew all my migraine triggers…

Hormones may be part of the pattern, but they may not be the whole story.

For some people, hormonal changes lower the threshold — and an underlying neck, jaw, or shoulder issue may be what pushes the system into a migraine.

Her migraines stumped doctors for 10 years.

The question that finally mattered?

Do your symptoms get worse with pressure changes?

For this patient, migraines often hit mid-morning and were affecting her ability to function, be present as a mom, and live her life.

When we asked about ear fullness, ear pressure, barometric pressure changes, flying, or driving up to the mountains, the answer was yes.

That gave us a clue.

Her pressure sensitivity may not have been random.

It may have been connected to how her neck was influencing her ability to tolerate pressure changes.

Sometimes the missing question is the one that unlocks the pattern.

Avoiding migraine triggers can feel productive.

And sometimes, it helps.

But if your entire life becomes about avoiding foods, alcohol, bright lights, weather changes, stress, or anything that might set off your symptoms… that may be a sign there’s a bigger issue underneath.

Think of it like a bucket.

Poor sleep, food sensitivities, pressure changes, bright lights, stress, and other triggers can all fill the bucket.

But when the bucket overflows, you end up in the migraine zone.

The real question is:

What is filling the bucket the most?

For many people, there may be an underlying driver of pain — often coming from the neck, jaw, or shoulders — and the triggers are just causing an already full system to overflow.

If your neck is connected to your headaches or migraines, the stretch you keep doing may not be helping the area you think it is.

The problem usually isn’t that the entire neck is stiff.

It may be that a few specific segments, especially in the upper neck, are irritated, stiff, or not moving well.

So when you yank your head to the side, you may be pulling on the mid-neck joints that are already stressed out instead of actually targeting the upper segments.

Specific movement matters.

The upper neck needs a more targeted approach than a general neck stretch.

When headaches keep coming back, the pattern matters.

Timing, posture, sleep position, activity, neck tension, and daily habits may all give clues about what is keeping the cycle going.

Instead of only waiting to see when the next headache hits, start looking for the objective patterns your body is giving you.

Medication can be helpful for symptom management, but it may not explain where the pain signal is actually coming from.

If migraines keep coming back, it may be worth looking for the underlying source of the pain instead of only managing the symptoms.

At Novera, we look at the source of pain, developmental barriers, and overall health so the bigger pattern does not get missed.

You cannot control barometric pressure, but you can look at what your body may already be carrying.

If your neck is already irritated, inflamed, or sensitized, a pressure change may be one more thing your system has trouble tolerating.

So instead of only reacting to the weather, it may be worth looking at the neck sensitivity that could be making those pressure changes feel worse.

"Period migraine on the same side every month? 👇

Hormones can impact your pain threshold, but the pain pattern still matters.

If your pain is one-sided, behind the eye, or wraps from the neck into the head, a neck-related source may also be part of the picture.

That means hormones may be lowering your tolerance while the neck is still contributing to the pain signal.
