Ruth Melendez of Colorado is Alzheimer’s Impact Movement’s (AIM) September Advocate of the Month! After 35 years of marriage and raising two children together, Ruth became her husband David’s primary caregiver while he lived with Alzheimer’s.

After David’s passing, Ruth decided to take action and encouraged her kids to do the same. “We have to do something to fight this disease. We’ve always been a family of fighters…It’s going to be part of his legacy.”

Today, Ruth and her family share their story to advocate for families like theirs. Over the last three years, she attended the AIM Advocacy Forum in Washington, D.C. along with her local state advocacy days, and she rallied for CMS to cover FDA-approved Alzheimer’s treatments. Additionally, her powerful voice convinced Rep. Doug Lamborn (CO-5) to cosponsor the Alzheimer’s Accountability and Investment Act and the BOLD Reauthorization Act, which were both signed into law last year.
