The mark of a settled nervous system for me is when I sink into and fully embrace this liminal space. The space between where I have been and where I am going. A space where, amidst all of the busy, I can just sit down, read a book and watch my children experience the unhinged freedom of summer at the pool. The quiet moments that exist between everything else, are where the seeds of magic are sown.
This moment of calm and doing a whole lot of “nothing” feels especially welcome. I’ve been training for the Pikes Peak Ascent, running my business, navigating relationships, mothering my children and in conversation about new work endeavors. My plate is deliciously full and it feels wonderfully expansive to be working toward so much. I am a busy bee, indeed.
But the busy bee must rest. She must find moments every day to be still. To let her mind wander and body relax. To let the sun soak into her soul and be blissfully aware of her children laughing ferociously somewhere in the distance. No agenda. Just existing and soaking it all up. There is no where else to be but right here. Right now.
Moments like these are my greatest teachers. Embodying the stillness and deep sense of calm is something I wish to always carry with me. I’ll carry it with me home tonight as I make dinner. I’ll carry it with me tomorrow as I pull my body up the incline with the sunrise. I’ll carry it with me the following day when I show up at my studio for sessions with my clients.
Woven into all of those “doings,” I will seek the moments of calm. The moment when I chop my vegetables a little bit slower and take the time to enjoy a glass of wine while I cook. The moment when I soak up the view at the top of the mountain before heading back down. The moment where I find flow with a client because a really, really good song came on at the perfect time.
Next time you’re feeling strung out, overloaded, not as present as you’d like…. Open your senses. Reach for a good book. Feel what’s going on in your body. Enjoy what’s right in front of you. The liminal is a really beautiful place to be, if we embrace it.
