SIL’s In Home Services program helps people with disabilities and older adults get the support they need to remain in their own homes.

Our in-home attendants are an important part of that work. They provide personal, practical support that helps people keep their routines, make their own choices and live with dignity.

This work takes patience, trust and care. It also makes a real difference in the daily lives of the people we serve.

We are grateful for the SIL staff who do this work with compassion and commitment, and for the role they play in helping make independent living possible.

The Supreme Court has already decided that living in the community is a legal right.

More than 25 years ago, the Supreme Court’s Olmstead decision affirmed that people with disabilities have the right to live in their communities and not be forced into institutions.

That ruling changed millions of lives. But a right on paper only works when people can get the support they need. That’s what Medicaid home and community-based services (HCBS) make possible.

Congress made the biggest cuts to Medicaid in history last year. Now, many states are considering options that could reduce access to HCBS.

Beginning July 1, MO HealthNet will stop paying for acupuncture, chiropractic and physical therapy services under the Complementary Health and Alternative to Chronic Pain Management program.

MO HealthNet will also stop paying for chiropractic services statewide. After June 30, visits to licensed chiropractors will no longer be covered.

These services are not extras for many people. They can help manage pain, improve mobility, support recovery and keep people active in daily life.

When lower cost care options are taken away, the need does not disappear. It often shifts people toward more expensive options later, including medication, specialist visits, emergency care or surgery.

That is not just bad health policy. It is bad budget policy.

For older adults and people with disabilities, access to care can directly affect independence, safety and quality of life.

Medicaid coverage decisions affect real people, real bodies and real lives.
