Breast milk is considered the best source of nutrition for most infants. Today, in observance of World Breastfeeding Week, Maury Regional Medical Center is sharing awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding.
Breast milk offers significant nutritional value and helps to create immediate bonding between mothers and babies. Breastfed babies also have reduced rates for asthma, obesity, type 2 diabetes, ear and respiratory infections, sudden infant death syndrome and gastrointestinal infections. Plus, breastfeeding can lower a mother's risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and breast or ovarian cancer.
As a result of our commitment to helping new mothers breastfeed, Maury Regional Medical Center has been recognized for four consecutive years as a BEST for Babies hospital by the Tennessee Department of Health. This award recognizes Tennessee hospitals for their efforts to reduce infant deaths by implementing breastfeeding safety and education initiatives, reducing early elective deliveries and promoting safe sleep practices.
