Elizabeth DuBard Grantland

Elizabeth DuBard “Liddy” Grantland passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026, of metastatic breast cancer. Like all her life challenges, Liddy faced cancer with extraordinary courage, determination, and humor.

Liddy was born to Rebecca DuBard Grantland and John Martin Grantland on February 20, 1998, the fifth anniversary of their marriage. She graduated with honors from Hammond School in 2016, where she was a member of the Cum Laude Society and recipient of the John Adger Manning Award given to the most outstanding member of the senior class.

Liddy received her Bachelor of Arts, summa cm laude, from Duke University in 2020 with majors in English and African American Studies and a minor in Theater. With a passion for working with the disabled, Liddy returned to Columbia in 2024 and was pursuing her Master of Social Work at the University of South Carolina at the time of her death.

An accomplished writer, Liddy’s collection of essays Flesh and Bones: Learning to Love This Body was published by the Resource Center for Women and Ministry in the South in 2021. Recently, she wrote about reproductive and body justice on her Substack page, Our Bodies: Ourselves.

Liddy was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Martin Grantland (Anderson, SC).

Dr. Luther Chase Williams III

Luther Chase Williams III died on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the age of 82. Born in Lancaster, South Carolina, on July 10, 1943, he was the son of the late Susan Jones Connelly and Charles Kearns Connelly Jr. and the grandson of Ira Boyd Jones and Minnie Craig Jones.

Luther is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carolyn Griffith Williams; his daughter, Ashby Williams Lang of Houston, Texas, and her husband, David; his daughter, Katherine Williams Foo of Lancaster, South Carolina, and her husband, Jeff; and his son, Charles Peter Andrew Williams of Dallas, Texas, and his wife, Ashley. Also cherishing his memory are his grandchildren, Carolyn Susan Renshaw, William Jackson Lang, Andrew Chase Williams, Julia Carys Lang, Samuel Lee Foo, Riley Madison Williams, and Jonathan Craig Lang. He was preceded in death by his son, Ian Craig Griffith Williams. His beloved fur baby, Nola, also survives him.

A devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbia, South Carolina, Luther was formerly active at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he served on the vestry and as a Eucharistic minister and chalice bearer. He also served on the board of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School.

Education and medicine were lifelong passions. After graduating as valedictorian of Lancaster High School, Luther earned a Bachelor of Science degree in pre-medicine from Davidson College and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. His medical training included an internship, residency, and fellowship in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology at MUSC, followed by an additional fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the University of Virginia Hospital.

Luther served as a pediatric cardiologist at the USAF Medical Center at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi before building a distinguished career in academic medicine and patient care. His appointments included clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at Tulane University School of Medicine, associate professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. In addition to teaching, he practiced pediatric cardiology at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans and at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina.

A true Renaissance man, Luther's curiosity and love of learning knew no bounds. As the owner of three harpsichords, including one he built himself, he spent countless hours playing and listening to classical music and sharing that passion with his children and grandchildren. After moving to Columbia, Luther took painting lessons, became an artist, and even hosted his own one-man show at the Lancaster County Arts Council. His vast knowledge of subjects, both practical and obscure, was never more on display than when he was beating his family and friends at Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit.

Luther was known to his beloved grandchildren simply as “Pops”. He built strong bonds with all of them and they will forever hold him close in their hearts. Whether it was playing board games or watching Seinfeld, he brought his full heart and attention to every gathering.

James Calvin Howerin

Jim Calvin Howerin, 68, of Blythewood, died on May 15, 2026. Born on March 12, 1958, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, he was the son of Calvin and Dot Howerin.

Jim always considered it a blessing to grow up in Virginia Beach, surrounded by loving grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Our cousins are often our first friends, and those relationships were shaped indelibly as the whole family gathered at the grandparents’ home each week for Sunday dinner.

Jim’s love for the water started there in Virginia Beach. He spent many days at the beach and learned to surf, making his love of the ocean even greater.

In the late 1970’s his family moved to Southern California. Again, being close to the ocean gave him new waters to conquer. While living there he was able to meet and join several groups that went to all the fun dance clubs. He loved to share stories of dancing until dawn, then rushing home to shower and head to work. Several times he even appeared on a dance show local to the area.

Jim eventually found his way back south, but this time to Georgia, as his family had moved there. He met his Southern Belle, Nanette, and decided maybe living back in the South wasn’t so bad after all. Jim and Nanette married on May 30, 1992, and he was thrilled to become Dad to Nanette’s daughter, Lauren. He cherished that cute little blondie with big blue eyes and loved her as his own.

Jim shared his love of dancing with Nanette; would grab her, looking down with his eyes sparkling, and say, “Hang on and just follow me, Punkin.” Pushing the furniture around in the living room to make a dance floor and turning on the music was a fun pastime and great way to spend an evening.

Jim had an amazing career as a CIO with several different companies. His vast knowledge and experience were admired and respected by his coworkers. Many considered him more of a mentor than a manager. It wasn’t uncommon for coworkers to reach out to him for advice and guidance, even after moving to other companies.

Jim was very kind, gracious of heart, and if you were blessed to have known him you know the value of his friendship. This is proven by the number of lifelong friends he had.

Jim is survived by his wife, Nanette, daughter, Lauren Godfrey (Kyle), grandson, Luke; mother, Dot Howerin, sister, Chris Gowers (Greg); and brother-in-law, Barry Langley. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, Calvin Howerin.

It is with profound sadness that we announce that Joyce “Nana” Lagatore, 95 of Columbia, SC, peacefully passed away in the arms of her beloved granddaughter, in the late hours on May 26th, 2026, surrounded by love and comfort.

Born on March 15th, 1931, in Hammonton, New Jersey, Joyce was the beloved daughter of Chester Ford Sr. and Vernila Bassett. She spent her early years in New Jersey before making South Carolina her home. She continued to build a life centered around family, friendship, hard work, and creating lasting memories.

Joyce dedicated many years of her life to serving others through her work, including positions at Tapps Department Store, Something Special, and Columbia's Ballroom Company: of course. She believed in the value of hard work and took pride in everything she did. Whether you saw her warm smile or stern glare, her welcoming personality is what made a lasting impression on customers, coworkers, friends, and neighbors alike.

Beyond her professional life, Joyce had a passion for people and experiences. She loved Broadway, local theater, movies, dancing, shopping adventures, and flea market strolls. She enjoyed traveling, and her journey took her across the country, never meeting a stranger.

To her Family, Joyce was more than a Mother, Grandmother or Aunt. She was a teacher, confidant, shopping partner, driving instructor, and best friend. She spent countless hours sharing stories and life's lessons, hosting dinners, playing cards, and creating memories that will be cherished forever. Whether it was late-night chats, studio events, sharing secrets, and laughter, Joyce created a bond with her loved ones that could never be broken.

Joyce will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, sense of humor, unwavering devotion to family, and her ability to find joy in life's simple moments. Her legacy lives on through the traditions she created, the lessons she taught, and the love she shared.

In addition to her parents, Chester and Vernila Ford Sr., Joyce is preceded in death by her youngest son, Paul Lagatore; her husband, Tom Lagatore Sr.; Her brothers, Charles and Chester Ford; and her sister, Lucille Mason.

She is survived by her sons: Tom Lagatore Jr. (Cynthia) and Alan Lagatore (Mary). Her grandchildren: Matthew Lagatore (Katelyn), Alania Lagatore, Brian Walters (Salena), Olivia Osland (Andy), Lisa Branham (Joel). Great grandchildren: Raylee Branham, Samuel Branham, Oliver Lagatore, and great great grandson Kadyn Branham.

In the hope of sharing memories of Joyce, the family would like to invite you to honor her by reflecting on the ways she impacted each of us. A Celebration of Life will be hosted by Elite Ballroom Dance Academy, 103 Legion Plaza Rd, Columbia, SC 29210. Time and Date to be announced.

Though she may no longer be with us in person, Joyce's smile and spirit will continue to dance on in the hearts of all who've known her. She will be deeply missed, always remembered, and forever loved.

Although flowers are appreciated, we would like you to consider donating to a Memorial Dance Scholarship being created in memory of Joyce & Paul Lagatore and their passion for continuing the art of dance. Please check back soon for updated information on this Scholarship.

May her faith take her to that place of peace, where one day we hope to see her again-
