Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is a rare inherited genetic condition that increases a person's risk of developing tumors and cancers in multiple organs throughout their lifetime.

MUSC Hollings Cancer Center is now South Carolina's only VHL Clinical Affiliate, recognized by the VHL Alliance for providing coordinated, multidisciplinary care for people with VHL.

The designation connects patients and families with experts across multiple specialties while supporting lifelong surveillance, earlier detection and more personalized care.

A new school year starts with the right tools and a caring community.

As students across Chester County headed back to school, residents at MUSC Health Chester Nursing Center assembled 127 school supply bags to help local students start the year prepared for success. Thanks to the generosity of community donors, this Back-to-School Service Project brought neighbors together to support students and families across the county.

Special thanks to Chester County School District Superintendent Tammy Snipes, Martika Twitty, Activity Coordinator, and Marie Jordan, Activity Director, for helping make this effort possible.

The presence of a therapy dog can provide meaningful support for healthcare teams by helping reduce stress, burnout and emotional exhaustion. In clinical settings, therapy animals offer moments of connection and relief for staff while also supporting goal-oriented patient recovery.

MUSC Therapy Animal Program Coordinator Cathy Bennett says the MUSC Therapy Animal Program supports care teams through dedicated PAWS visits, with teams spending two-hour shifts focused on visiting hospital staff.

“This approach allows the teams to spend time in high-pressure decision-making areas, facilitating personalized therapeutic interactions with those who dedicate themselves to caring for others,” Bennett said.

Visits from therapy animals in high-intensity units have brought additional benefits for care teams, including boosted morale through smiles, laughter and meaningful conversations. The presence of these special companions also encourages connection among colleagues, creating opportunities for teams to pause, interact and support one another during demanding days.

Sha’Ron Robertson’s greatest wish was simple: to make it home to her son.

On July 15, surrounded by one of the largest groups of loved ones and care team members we’ve seen at a bell-ringing ceremony, Sha’Ron celebrated her health and honored her organ donors and their families for giving her a second chance at life.

She thanked the teams who stood beside her throughout her journey, including Cardiologist Dr. Jessica Atkins, who helped Sha'Ron get listed for transplant, and Prisma Health nurse practitioner Michelle O’Hara, who helped facilitate her transfer to MUSC Health when every moment mattered.

Today, Sha’Ron is back where she belongs: with her family and her son.

Her story shows that collaboration across specialties matters and why MUSC Health continues to be recognized as the No. 1 hospital in South Carolina by U.S. News & World Report. It reminds us what matters most: helping patients get back to the people and moments they love.

As we age or take GLP-1 medications, protecting our bones becomes just as important as the number on the scale.

Here, Registered Dietitian Alaine Mills with the MUSC Health & Wellness Institute explains why getting enough protein matters, but also why it's only one piece of the puzzle. Healthy fats, carbohydrates and enough overall calories all work together to help maintain bone mass, muscle and overall health.

If you're taking a weight loss medication or thinking about starting one, this is important information you won't want to miss.
