Classes at Sumit Hot Yoga flow to music through a sequence of both balancing and energizing asanas (poses) in a heated practice

environment. At Sumits Yoga, we understand the healing aspect of heat. In a yoga class, you practice poses that require stretching and compression of the joints, muscles, ligaments and other supporting structures of the body. Your body naturally protects itself from physical exertion by generating heat from the inside muscles outwards. We start with the heat up front…providing extra protection from the very first poses. Another added benefit is that your body burns fat more effectively. It's not uncommon for our students practicing regularly to lose inches of shape in a relatively short time. Though classes are designed to optimize physical health by waking and energizing the entire body, Sumits Yoga stresses that the greatest benefit comes not as much from the healing of the body, but from the healing of the mind. The simple pleasure and self-reward that comes from quieting our minds, listening to each breath and honoring where are bodies are in stillness or movement cannot be measured. You do not measure your yoga practice by how many perfectly aligned poses you can perform, but by how deep you can immerse yourself inwards. It's amazing how a simple downward dog can be felt so differently by any student on any given day and still provide a feeling of connection, balance and satisfaction regardless of the depth it's practiced. This is the true beauty of yoga and it awaits every student who is ready let go of the ego and begin listening to their own deeper wisdom and inner voice.

Chris's Story

Hi, my name is Chris. If you are reading this, it is nice to meet you. My yoga journey started back in 2013 way out West in Albuquerque. Truth be told, I never really wanted to try yoga. I had always viewed it as just stretching in the heat and that didn’t really interest me at all. However, in early 2013, I went out on a first date and she suggested we go take a yoga class together. I was nervous about going to a heated yoga class, but figured it couldn’t be that bad. It’s just stretching, right? I don't know exactly what happened in that first class, but I loved everything about it. It unlocked a passion inside of me that I never realized I was missing out on. Almost like going to Chipotle for the first time. What makes it so good? Is it the tortilla, the chicken, or the salsa? Who really knows? I just knew I wanted to go back the next day and find out. After about 6 months of trying to understand yoga and practicing yoga, the opportunity to take the yoga RYT 200 teacher training came up. I decided that, that was the natural progression to learn more and further my practice.

When I completed the teacher training, I spent about a year and a half teaching the warm and gentle classes at the studio I attended. Teacher training and instructing gave me an entirely different perspective on my yoga practice. It encouraged self-exploration, introduced me to the spiritual aspects of yoga and the body's energy, and ultimately deepened my passion for the practice. I still can’t believe the journey that yoga has taken me on. If I could go back in some sort of DeLorean to tell myself about how the journey unfolded thus far, I wouldn’t believe it. Yoga has given me so much and has forever changed me. The only thing it has ever really asked in return is that I show up. How I view myself, how I work with my breath and connect to my body, and being more present in the moment has all changed for the better through yoga.

Life later brought me to Columbia in 2023 and I am very grateful to have found a studio like Sumits Yoga, that I can attend to further my yoga journey. It’s such a great community to be involved in and feels like a new home. Everyone has been so welcoming. I truly appreciate the opportunity to continue growing my practice here in Mid-Missouri alongside such an incredible community of like-minded yogis.

Lily's Story

I first came to the studio when I was 12 or 13 years old and honestly I hated it at first. I was a gymnast practicing 20 hours a week and truly just did not understand why my parents were dragging me to class.

A couple years later I decided to quit gymnastics because my body couldn’t handle it anymore due to recurring injuries. After quitting I was lost because gymnastics was essentially my whole identity, I had no idea what to do with myself. Pretty soon after I started taking classes regularly, then got a job working the front desk the month after I turned 16. I immediately fell in love with this place and the practice. My favorite part about gymnastics was always that there was a right way for everything to be done and that I got to move my body in such cool ways, so this yoga practice brought me that same energy and I love it.

Beyond the physical practice of keeping my strength and flexibility, yoga has helped me a lot with anxiety. I used to be a super anxious person but from this practice I've learned to breathe and stay calm in all sorts of situations, in and outside of the studio.

I decided to get my 200 hour certification, and was certified less than 6 months after working here. I was only 16, very young, and was worried I wouldn't be accepted or taken seriously. But I was very wrong. Everyone here was so supportive and very quickly became my family. I always tell everyone Sumits is a great place to practice, but the real reason I stick around is for the people. I've been here for five and a half years now and everyone here has watched me grow up, has been here for every milestone of my life, and has been there for me through all the good and bad things that have happened. This place and practice means the world to me and I'm forever grateful for my Sumits family :)
