Living in Columbia means dealing with some serious heat and humidity - and if you're already struggling with hot flashes and night sweats during menopause, our summers can feel downright unbearable.

I see so many women in my practice who dread summer because they know it means months of feeling overheated, sleeping poorly, and avoiding activities they used to love.

While these cooling strategies definitely help manage symptoms, balanced hormones can make the real difference between just surviving Columbia summers and actually enjoying them again.

You shouldn't have to hide indoors for four months of the year or avoid outdoor activities because of hot flashes. With the right support, many of my patients find they can embrace summer in South Carolina instead of dreading it.

Intermittent fasting is everywhere right now, but I need to share some truth about why it often backfires for women over 40.

Here's what could happen when you skip meals during perimenopause and menopause:

🚫 Cortisol spikes - Fasting is a form of stress on your body. When your hormones are already fluctuating, adding fasting stress can push cortisol even higher, making sleep and mood issues worse.

🚫 Thyroid function slows - Your thyroid interprets long fasting periods as "famine mode" and can slow down metabolism to conserve energy. This is the opposite of what most women want.

🚫 Blood sugar becomes more unstable - Without estrogen's stabilizing effects, many women become more sensitive to blood sugar swings, making fasting feel awful.

🚫 Sleep quality suffers - Going to bed hungry or with unstable blood sugar often disrupts the deep sleep you desperately need for hormone production.

Instead of intermittent fasting, I encourage my patients to focus on:

✅ Protein at every meal to support steady energy
✅ Regular meal timing to support circadian rhythms
✅ Balancing blood sugar throughout the day
