Imagine waking up in a hospital bed with no memory of what happened.

That was Gail’s reality after a serious car crash in March 2025 that left her with a devastating injury.

After retiring from the Army Dental Corps, Gail had built a quiet, independent life in Warsaw, Missouri, spending time with her rescue cats, tending to her garden and helping care for her parents. But her crash left her with a severe pilon fracture, a complex injury that crushed her ankle joint and threatened her ability to walk without pain.

That’s when she met Dr. Kyle Schweser at the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute.

Together, they discussed all of her options and decided on an innovative procedure to repair her fracture and replace her ankle joint at the same time. The procedure offered Gail the opportunity to reclaim the independence she feared losing after the crash.

Dr. Schweser and his team were the first in the U.S. to publish documentation on this approach for pilon fractures, helping create new possibilities for patients with these complex injuries.

After her surgery and rehabilitation at our Rusk Rehabilitation Hospital, Gail slowly worked her way from a wheelchair to walking on her own again.

When she got home and climbed the steps for the first time after her injury, she knew she had made the right decision.

“I wanted to be independent, and I wanted to be able to do things myself,” Gail said. “Dr. Schweser and his entire team at MU Health Care were lifesavers.”

For Christian Birtell, making a difference starts with something simple: showing up with a positive attitude.

As one of our cardiovascular nurses, Christian cares for people during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. He says bringing compassion, kindness and optimism to every interaction is one of the most important parts of his job.

“I take pride in having a job where I can help people and make a difference when they need it the most,” he said.

That same outlook inspired him to found Show Me Happy, an organization dedicated to spreading kindness and creating moments of joy. More recently, he helped connect those efforts to MU Health Care through a collaboration with the Office of Well-Being, bringing initiatives like handwritten Happy Grams and uplifting videos to employees across the organization.

For Christian, happiness is rooted in service to others. “I want to leave the world and Mizzou better than I found it,” he said. “To me, that’s the ultimate happiness.”

We're proud to have team members like Christian who make MU Health Care a brighter place for patients, colleagues and our community.

Many people believe a "base tan" can help prevent sunburn and protect against skin cancer. The truth is that any tan from the sun is a sign of skin damage caused by UV rays.

"Even if your skin doesn't burn, a tan is evidence that UV radiation has damaged your skin," says Dr. Jordan Parker. If you'd like the appearance of tanned skin, sunless tanning products are a safer alternative. Just remember that a sunless tan doesn't protect you from UV rays, so sunscreen and other sun-safe habits are still essential!
