October is Estate Planning Awareness Month. And most people have some version of it on the "I'll get to it" list.

Here are 5 things worth checking off before the year ends:

Write or update your will. Even a basic will is better than none. It tells your family what you want and prevents your assets from being distributed by default.

Update your beneficiaries. Life insurance, retirement accounts, 401(k)s. Beneficiary designations actually override what's in your will, so keeping them current matters.

Assign power of attorney. Both financial and medical. This gives someone the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf if you can't.

Create a healthcare directive. Also called a living will. It documents your wishes for medical care, so your family isn't left guessing.

Have the conversation. Documents don't help anyone if your family doesn't know they exist. Tell someone where things are, and what your wishes actually are.
