MEDICALLY CLEARED DOES NOT EQUAL ATHLETICALLY CLEARED 🤱➡️🏃🏽‍♀️

Have you given birth and then been told after your 6 week check in with your OBGYN that you are good to go with return to sport?

Did you know that postpartum healing can take up to a full year and initiating running or jumping too early can interfere with that healing process?

It’s an unfortunate situation that occurs and leads people giving birth to have fear over return to fitness and even has them giving up certain activities due to new symptoms.

What if I told you It is not normal to leak, have heaviness in your pelvic floor muscles, or have pain with your return to exercise after having a baby.

Pelvic floor physical therapy can help! We work with you step by step to start you on your journey back to fitness or sport.

Want to know more about how pelvic floor PT can help you? 🔗 in bio to schedule your free 20 minute phone consultation.

IVE BEEN A PHYSICAL THERAPIST FOR A YEAR 🎉🎉🎉

So grateful to get through this initial year and come out with so much knowledge & humility gained.

Things I’ve done:
💥Helped hundreds of people get back to their sport, work tasks, & family obligations with less pain and more knowledge about their bodies
💥Become a Certified Pelvic health PT (getting all those postpartum yogis & fitness athletes back to their sport is my dream)
💥Been an expert consultant on several yoga teacher trainings (with more in the works)
💥Started a growing mobile practice with my best friend & partner
💥Been tested constantly by the ever changing healthcare environment
💥Become a clinical instructor for PT students (I was born to teach in all capacities)

Things I’ve learned:
💡Sometimes (a lot of the times) my differential diagnosis skills out rule other medical providers simply because I listen to my clients.
💡Boundaries are important and that often means leaving things to the next day/visit (a perfectionist’s worst nightmare but something I’ve learned to embrace)
💡Physical therapy is not well respected and it’s our job as professionals to improve this. We can’t continue to act lesser than physicians & can’t act higher than fitness professionals. We are a unique blend of both and therefore must shine as leaders in both settings in order to be true experts.
💡The medical field will constantly try to son you, especially if you are a POC. Ignore the noise and push through on your path. Align yourself with those who get it/get you.

Overall, this has been an amazing year (way better than PT school 😂)

Cheers to many more years as Dr. Ross (soon to be Dr. Addy 💍)

FIX YOUR SPHINX POSE 🕉

🧘🏽‍♀️Sphinx pose is one of my favorite backbends and also a go to exercise to treat certain types of low back pain.

Often times I see people sinking into their Sphinx pose and allowing gravity to take over. Here are some of my favorite tips/cues to engage and activate this posture to prevent excessive dumping of weight into the low back.

💡Instead of tuck the chin towards the chest try, “Look at your nose”

💡Instead of Shoulders away from ears try , “Imagine you are pulling the front of the mat to the back of the mat with your hands”

💡Instead of tucking your tailbone try, “Press into the tops of your feet and imagine you are bringing your butt towards your heels”

How do you cue Sphinx?

MASTERING PELVIC TILT 💥

Have you ever wonder how to teach or practice the alignment of the pelvis during yoga?

Check out this video to learn an easy way to feel anterior and posterior pelvic tilt and how to find a neutral pelvis during core work.

The block keeps us engaged because we don’t want to drop it and also provides a tactile cue to help us figure out exactly where to move.

Save and share this one with a yogi you think would like this content.

SPINAL HYPEREXTENSION 🔥🔥

Normal spinal extension active range of motion is around 20-35 degrees depending on which overlying medical body you ask (orthopedic surgeons or American Medical Association)

In yoga we go far beyond this range in order to achieve back bends….even in upward facing dog.

So is this dangerous? 🤔

Well no. It’s safe and effective to extend the spine. However, we must practice caution when it comes to just hinging at one part of the spine repetitively.

Some fun things to try in this posture in order to avoid this include:
1. Try to roll the neck into extension one vertebra at a time and slowly in order to spread the load
2. Tuck your chin into your chest (make a double chin) to strengthen your deep neck muscles

Understanding the anatomy behind our yoga postures can help us offer MANY variations to those coming to our classes with different abilities.

How do you practice upward facing dog? 🧘🏽‍♀️🧘🏿‍♀️🧘🏻‍♂️🧘🏻🧘🏼‍♀️🧘‍♂️

SHOULDER MOBILITY YOGA CHALLENGE 🔥

Learned this one from during the 300HR YTT that I helped with alongside and . It was too good not to share.

Do you hear clicks and pops in your shoulder as reach overhead or behind your back? These are usually benign (but if there is pain involved seek out a PT) and can sometimes be due to a lack of shoulder mobility.

💪🏽Our shoulder mobility is important in yoga for downward facing dog, binds, and twists. And in everyday life we need optimal shoulder range of motion to dress ourselves, wipes ourselves, and be able to reach into the back seat of our car.

✅Try this out and share with someone you think would benefit. Tag me in your attempts!

It’s whatever. You know, feeling good, livin better. 🌻
