"Protein matters, but making sure you’re getting enough might be simpler than you think. In fact, most US teens are already meeting their protein needs, according to Lauren Hartman, MD, a double board-certified pediatrician and adolescent medicine specialist. “Adolescents who generally have a varied diet really do get adequate protein for their needs,” Dr. Hartman says. “There are certain areas, like a teen with food insecurity or a vegan, where we have to be a little more creative and intentional about making sure they're getting enough protein, but most teens do actually get enough.'"

Protein is everywhere, but that doesn't mean it's everything.

"What began as a demand for structural change became a performance of self-love curated for engagement. And once the message was watered down, it became easier for critics to redefine it on their own terms. If body positivity is only framed as “love your body no matter what,” it becomes easier to argue that it dismisses health concerns. But that framing completely ignores its foundation. Body positivity was never anti-health. It was anti-shame, and that is a significant difference."

Body positivity did not tell anyone to ignore medical advice and reject health. It told society to treat all bodies with dignity and respect.

"Once I reframed my thinking around the middle place, I began to make meaningful progress in my recovery. Instead of seeing any “slips” as grounds for failure, I came to see them as opportunities for progress. I challenged myself to get back up after slipping, rather than letting every slip turn into a slide. And I started telling a truer narrative about my recovery, born of the belief that complicated truths help us grow in ways that sugarcoating seldom can; they make us more attuned to gray spaces by widening our view of the world beyond black or white, positive or negative."

A writer talks about shame, relapsing, and redefining of progress in the “middle place” of eating-disorder recovery.

"Perfectionism does not just influence how eating disorders develop; it also shapes how they endure. When high standards shift from being motivating to being mandatory, they can turn daily eating habits and exercise routines into rigid rules that feel non-negotiable. This internal pressure often drives secrecy and self-surveillance, creating a fear of deviating from what has been set as “acceptable.” What starts as an attempt to manage distress or achieve control can become a cycle of self-criticism, where even small lapses feel like personal failures rather than natural fluctuations."

Explore how perfectionism fuels eating disorders and complicates recovery, offering insight into treatment, shame, and redefining progress beyond rigid standards.
