Rhino/enteroviruses are everywhere right now causing fevers, runny noses, coughs and congestion. Every parent wants to try something to help their child feel better. Here is what is safe and effective.

FEVER...Ibuprofen and Tylenol, cool rags on the forehead and underarms, lukewarm baths, and hydration. Kids need to p*e at least 3 x in 24 hours.

CONGESTION...saline rinses, sprays, netti pots, etc are fantastic and can be done often. Use distilled water if mixing yourself. Hypertonic saline (2.6-3% salt) is very helpful when ill. You can use it twice/day. Sometimes zyrtec can help with ear pressure from congestion. Afrin or children's afrin is safe and highly effective but can have rebound symptoms so can only be used for 6 doses in a row before taking 48 hours off. Either 3 days in am and pm or 6 nights of bedtime only to help with sleep.

COUGH...for kids under 1 year, saline, suction, and children's afrin. For kids older than 1 year and younger then 6 years, a tsp of honey has the best data to help with cough. No cough medicines are safe for kids under 6 years as they can cause fatal arrhythmias (funny heart beats)!

Keep kids safe and get them healthy faster by letting them rest, ensuring good hydration, and avoiding harmful medications!

WHY won't your child sleep? There are SO many reasons but NONE of them have to do with you being a bad parent or "doing it wrong"!

* Cognitive gains are when babies brains are learning new skills...walking, crawling, eating, bursts of language. When their brains are on overdrive, some children sleep better and others have disrupted sleep. This is a normal, short-lived (frustrating) phase.

* Recent travel or changes in routines can make sleep more delicate for many children. Sticking to your expected routine for 1-2 weeks often gets this back on track.

* Illness, pain, or teething can alter sleep cycles and it can take time (or medication) to help get back to where you were.

* Object permanence is when babies learn that things exist even when not seen. So when they wake up overnight, they might want to see your face and know they are safe ๐Ÿ˜€

* Bedtime routines can impact overnight sleep needs

* Snoring is NEVER normal in children and needs to be addressed.

* Sleep is essential for everyone! Babies, kids, and adults. Talk with your pediatrician about tips to get everyone sleeping in your house!

May USED to be my favorite month...now it is SO BUSY! We feel it, the teachers, kids, and coaches feel it. How to get through?

* Eat when you can. It's OK to let homemade family dinners slide right now. Eat at the ballpark, the food truck at the kid's event, whatever feeds everyone and is easy. Pack veges and fruits in lunches for more balance.

* Pack as much as able the day (or 2) before needed for whatever end-of-year recital, concert, event. This keeps you from rushing and forgetting something.

* Any possible night that you aren't slammed, get everyone to bed as early as possible. Everyone is exhausted and kids WILL go to bed earlier if given the opportunity (and so should parents)

* Enlist help! If you have family or neighbors to help with carpools, ask for help to get everyone where they need to go! Being a constant chauffeur is also exhausting!

* Any down time should be spent winding down...this is not the best month for a sporadic trip to fun city. Crafts, games, books, even a little TV sounds good.

* What are your best tricks to survive the end of the school year madness?

If you or your child has seasonal allergies, prepare for a rough few days. When the weather changes so dramatically, we see an increase in allergens, especially tree pollen.

* Keep windows closed and use AC with a hepa filter
* Take your allergy medications as prescribed
* Saline sinus rinses daily will help clear out allergens
* Shower after spending time outside
* Limit outside time

YAY!! This has been a wicked viral season, but it appears we are trending in the right direction. RSV and Influenza B numbers are dropping in the community. So, stay vigilant about hand washing and eating/sleeping well, but hopefully we will be able to have less illness very soon!!
