Rhino/enteroviruses are everywhere right now causing fevers, runny noses, coughs and congestion. Every parent wants to try something to help their child feel better. Here is what is safe and effective.
FEVER...Ibuprofen and Tylenol, cool rags on the forehead and underarms, lukewarm baths, and hydration. Kids need to p*e at least 3 x in 24 hours.
CONGESTION...saline rinses, sprays, netti pots, etc are fantastic and can be done often. Use distilled water if mixing yourself. Hypertonic saline (2.6-3% salt) is very helpful when ill. You can use it twice/day. Sometimes zyrtec can help with ear pressure from congestion. Afrin or children's afrin is safe and highly effective but can have rebound symptoms so can only be used for 6 doses in a row before taking 48 hours off. Either 3 days in am and pm or 6 nights of bedtime only to help with sleep.
COUGH...for kids under 1 year, saline, suction, and children's afrin. For kids older than 1 year and younger then 6 years, a tsp of honey has the best data to help with cough. No cough medicines are safe for kids under 6 years as they can cause fatal arrhythmias (funny heart beats)!
Keep kids safe and get them healthy faster by letting them rest, ensuring good hydration, and avoiding harmful medications!
