Meet Jensen!

Jensen's story begins in Tennessee. Shortly after birth, he refused to eat and his belly became distended. Jensen was quickly transferred to a nearby children's hospital where he was diagnosed with Hirschsprung disease.

Occurring in one in 5,000 live births, Hirschsprung disease results in part of the intestines working improperly. Jensen received surgery immediately and spent 13 days in the NICU recovering.

After he was discharged, Jensen's parents hoped his condition would improve but unfortunately that was not the case. His mom began researching the best places for Hirschsprung disease care and that is how she discovered Dr. Richard Wood and Nationwide Children's.

After consulting with Dr. Wood and his team, the family was able to travel to Ohio the very next day. Upon admission, Jensen immediately underwent surgery to receive an ileostomy. A procedure that would ultimately save his life.

An ileostomy is a surgical operation that creates an opening in the belly, known as a stoma, to route waste out of the small intestine, bypassing the large intestine.

Following surgery, Jensen's health improved. His mom shares, “We remained at Nationwide Children's for a few days and the care team was great at teaching us how to care for Jensen. They even gave us a rabbit that had a stoma so that Jensen's siblings would not be scared when we returned home.”

At 8 months old, Jensen was finally thriving! His health had greatly improved, and he was able to have additional needed procedures, including re**al reconstruction and an ileostomy takedown.

Now 9 years old, Jensen is thriving. His mom shares, “[We've had] a few hiccups along the way with other health issues, but Jensen has thrived and grown and we are forever thankful to God for his guidance and leading us to Dr. Wood and his team and for all the support they have given us.”

Patients like Jensen make an impact on the team here at Nationwide Children's, too. Dr. Wood shares, “Our patients are the key to what we do in care and research. We have focused our whole team on patient experience and outcomes. Every patient we care for is an opportunity to improve quality of life for patients and their parents and siblings.”

Meet Phillip!

Phillip’s journey began before he was even born. During pregnancy, ultrasounds suggested he had only one kidney. After developing preeclampsia, Phillip’s mom was induced one month early, and Phillip was born the next day.

After birth, Phillip was diagnosed with VACTERL association and was transferred to Nationwide Children’s.

VACTERL association is a group of seven birth defects that may occur in different areas of the body. The letters in VACTERL each represent an area of the body that can be affected.

Phillip's diagnosis included horseshoe kidneys, an affected left thumb, a tethered spinal cord and an anore**al malformation.

On his third day of life, Phillip received a colostomy bag, and five months later surgeons created the opening he needed for his anore**al malformation. A month later, his colostomy bag was removed!

Now, as Phillip prepares for spinal surgery to detether his spinal cord, his family is filled with gratitude.

“We will never be able to thank the colore**al team enough for doing the unthinkable for our family,” his family shares.

Meet Elowyn!

Elowyn, affectionately known as “Tiny”, has been a bright light to everyone since the day she was born. Born with Down syndrome, Elowyn has faced many challenges in her young life, but her unwavering happiness and joyful spirit always shine through.

After months of bowel problems, Elowyn was diagnosed with Hirschsprung disease at eight months old at a hospital near her home in Chicago. She was immediately scheduled for surgery, but after contracting RSV, her surgery was postponed.

While Elowyn was hospitalized for RSV, her mother began researching Hirschsprung disease. She wanted Elowyn's surgery to be performed by a colore**al surgeon who specialized in the disease.

That's when she found Dr. Richard Wood at Nationwide Children's.

After further testing to confirm Elowyn's diagnosis, Dr. Wood and the Center for Colore**al and Pelvic Reconstruction (CCPR) team discovered that Elowyn had been misdiagnosed.

Elowyn was diagnosed with Internal A**l Sphincter Achalasia or IASA.

“The CCPR team has been the most supportive, caring and involved group of specialists we've ever worked with. Dr. Wood is truly something special. His compassion, expertise, and willingness to listen changed the course of Elowyn's life,” Elowyn's family shares.

“Because of him, she was spared an unnecessary, painful, and life-altering surgery and given a much more favorable prognosis than we were originally told. Her future is bright! We will be forever grateful for Dr. Wood and his wonderful team!”
