On psychological illiteracy and why literacy matters in therapy and life. And, there absolutely is a time and place for meds. They usually work best alongside therapy.

“We live in a culture that is psychologically illiterate; that elects psychopaths and malignant narcissists to political office; that falls for mental health snake oil and fads; that believes health insurance propaganda that long-standing mental health problems can be resolved in 6-8 sessions; that is taken in by performative Insta-therapists and mistakes self-promotion and marketing for knowledge; that chooses medication over self-reflection; that mistakes venture-funded startups for mental health care; and pays the price in rising rates of su***de, depression, anxiety, violence, and deaths of despair.”

Students think they are learning psychology. Instead, they are taught caricatures.

"Psychotherapy takes time. It follows a dose-response curve. It takes more than 20 sessions, or about six months of weekly therapy, before 50 percent of patients show meaningful improvement. It takes more than 40 sessions for 75 percent of patients to improve."

Patients and therapists should ignore new guidelines for treating trauma.

As therapists, we’re all navigating clients’ use of AI for support, understanding, and guidance. For some clients, it’s been a useful tool to use in between sessions. And, if understanding was all it took to heal, I’d gladly be out of a job.

“You cannot think your way out of pain. No amount of digging, no answer, no justification could fill the hole inside me.”

I wasn’t dependent on ChatGPT. I was attached to the idea that if I understood my pain entirely, I would finally stop hurting.

The number of times a client shares something along the lines of “I know I’m all over the place today” and I don’t feel they are. I feel there’s just a lot of complexity unfolding.

So much conversation about the pros and cons of AI in the therapist spaces I frequent. As with many things, there’s lots of complexity and nuance to consider. I appreciate what this article brings up about it.

Artificial intelligence therapy can't replicate the human need to exist in another's mind. We need real people to hold our stories, provide genuine boundaries, and offer lived experience.

If you wonder why so many therapists, including myself, don't take insurance, here are some of the reasons why.
