Dr. Uwe Wernekinck is a clinical social worker with years of experience in community mental health, hospital-based trauma work, social work education, and research. He was born and raised in Germany and holds a Bachelor of Science (2012) and Master of Science (2014) in Psychology from Ruhr University Bochum, Germany. He later obtained both his Master of Social Work (2020) and PhD (2024) from The Ohio State University. Uwe completed his post-graduate training as an adult trauma therapist with the Center for Family Safety and Healing at Nationwide Children’s Hospital supporting adult survivors of intimate partner violence. Uwe’s dissertation research used qualitative research methods to better understand the intersection of sexual trauma and addiction for male survivors of childhood sexual abuse. His work advocates for the need to acknowledge both the prevalence and impact of sexual trauma on male survivors and to view substance use as an effective yet maladaptive coping skill. Uwe has published his work in high impact journals such as the Journal of Child S*xual Abuse and has presented his research both nationally and internationally. As an EMDR trained clinician, he combines evidence-based trauma care with elements of client-centered therapy. He creates a therapeutic space grounded in safety, empathy, genuineness, and empowerment. Uwe provides individual therapy to adults and specializes in the treatment of PTSD, childhood abuse, substance use, and family violence, as well as grief and challenging life adjustments. In addition to his clinical role at Rutti Counseling Consultation, he continues to serve as an associated faculty member in the College of Social Work at The Ohio State University educating the next generation of social workers.
