At just 5 weeks old, Lucy Gladish’s life took an unexpected turn when a sudden fever led to a trip to the Piedmont Columbus Pediatric Emergency Department.

For Lucy’s parents, Ethan and Juliana, this was new and frightening territory, especially since their older daughter had always been healthy.

After a spinal tap was performed, Lucy was admitted to the Bill and Olivia Amos Children’s Hospital, where Dr. David Flowers diagnosed her with bacterial meningitis. Lucy needed IV antibiotics, but staff had difficulty accessing her veins. Pediatric surgeon Dr. Don Nakayama surgically placed a central line so she could receive the medication she needed, allowing Lucy to stay close to home for treatment instead of traveling hours away to a larger medical center.

For 26 days, Lucy received expert care from a compassionate team dedicated to helping her heal. Ethan and Juliana are grateful for the way Lucy’s care team explained each step clearly, involved them in care decisions, and helped their daughter recover close to home during one of the most difficult moments in their lives.

The John B. Amos Cancer Center is grateful to Genentech ’s Georgia United Ecosystem for helping stock our food pantry for patients experiencing food insecurity.

Their donation will provide 52 emergency meal kits, totaling 624 meals for patients and families in need.

When someone is in the middle of chemotherapy, radiation or recovering from surgery, worrying about what’s for dinner is one more burden they shouldn’t have to carry. A stocked pantry helps take that worry off the table so patients and families can focus more of their energy on healing. 🧡

At 30 years old, Alexis Eldridge was diagnosed with breast cancer. She later learned she carried the BRCA1 gene, which can increase breast cancer risk.

The Columbus mother of three went through chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and radiation at the John B. Amos Cancer Center.
Alexis says Dr. Mukesh Kumar helped make a difficult time easier by clearly explaining what to expect, while the clinical team helped her feel informed and supported throughout treatment.

Today, Alexis is continuing her survivorship journey and encouraging other women to listen to their bodies, speak up when something doesn’t feel right, stay on top of routine care and talk with loved ones about family health history and genetic testing.

Join us in celebrating our October ® Officer Conner Ramey with the Opelika Police Department.

When first responders arrived at the home of Frazier Moreman, Officer Ramey and his partner found him unresponsive, pulseless, and not breathing. The officers immediately used their AED, and Officer Ramey began CPR, continuing lifesaving efforts for more than three minutes until Opelika Fire Department arrived.

Thanks to Officer Ramey’s quick actions and the care provided at Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown, Frazier recovered after treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.

Officer Ramey’s calm, decisive response helped save a life. At a special recognition ceremony on , Officer Ramey and the medical team were surprised when Frazier and his family attended to express their gratitude for the lifesaving care they received personally. 🧡

After experiencing the loss of her twin boys, Ritch and Rhett, KeLeigh Pritchett wanted to create something that could bring comfort to other families facing a similar loss.

KeLeigh gave birth to the twins at Piedmont Columbus Midtown in July 2021. Ritch died before birth, and Rhett died in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit several days later. In November 2022, KeLeigh and her husband, Preston, welcomed their son Ford.

KeLeigh says the Lord later put it on her heart to write a children’s book about her babies in heaven. She recently donated copies to the Piedmont Columbus Midtown NICU, where team members can share them with families experiencing pregnancy or infant loss.

Each year, KeLeigh and Preston use money they would have spent celebrating Ritch and Rhett’s birthdays to print more copies of the book, with the hope that their sons’ story can bring comfort to another family. 🧡

After facing loss, cancer, injury, anxiety, and depression, Melissa's struggle with alcohol reached a crisis point in 2024. She was hospitalized at Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown, where she was connected with addiction medicine specialist Samuel Nwaobi, M.D.

When Melissa missed appointments, Dr. Nwaobi called to check on her. That conversation helped her take the next step: entering a treatment program. After completing the program, she returned to his care for ongoing support and medication for alcohol use disorder.

Today, Melissa is committed to her recovery and hopes to become a peer recovery specialist so she can support others on their own paths forward. 🧡

The safest sleep starts with the ABCs: Alone, on their Back and in a Crib.

Shuan Chen, M.D., a pediatrician with Piedmont Physicians Pediatrics at Midtown Columbus, and Safe Kids Columbus Director Pam Fair are helping parents and caregivers understand how a safe sleep environment can reduce the risk of accidental suffocation and other sleep-related causes of infant death.

Review the ABCs of safe sleep and learn how to create a safer space for your baby every time they sleep:

Co-sleeping, known as bedsharing, occurs when a baby sleeps in the same bed as a parent or caregiver. Healthcare recommend following the ABCs of safe sleep.

For patients navigating an unfamiliar diagnosis, a difficult treatment, or a stressful hospital stay, comfort can make a meaningful difference. Sometimes, that comfort arrives on four paws.

Through Piedmont’s partnership with Happy Tails Pet Therapy, certified volunteer therapy dogs visit patients and staff across metro Atlanta. Their presence can help ease anxiety, reduce stress, and provide a calming emotional connection during moments that may feel overwhelming.

By bringing moments of comfort and reassurance into the hospital environment, programs like pet therapy help create a more supportive, compassionate experience for the people we care for.

Their visits are a reminder that even small moments of support can have a meaningful impact on a patient’s experience. 🧡

When hip and leg soreness started slowing Mark McKay down, he thought it might be a nerve issue. His primary care physician, Dr. Korie, suspected there could be more to the story.

An X-ray revealed osteoarthritis in Mark’s right hip, setting him on the path to a hip replacement and physical therapy with Piedmont Orthopedics.

Recovery meant relearning some of the everyday movements most of us never think twice about, from tying his shoes to simply moving with ease. But with a care team Mark describes as “phenomenal,” he kept moving forward.

Today, the longtime 95.5 WSB traffic reporter is back on the air, back to doing what he loves and moving more like himself again.

For Mark, the road back started with a primary care physician who recognized there might be more going on.

Piedmont Heart is No. 1 in the Southeast. 🧡

U.S. News and World Report has named Piedmont Heart Institute the best program in the Southeast for cardiology, heart and vascular surgery in its 2026–2027 Best Hospitals rankings. And for the first time, Piedmont Heart ranks among the top 20 heart programs in the nation.

Piedmont Heart also earned “High Performing” recognition in all eight heart procedures and conditions evaluated.

“Placing among the nation’s top 20 heart programs and earning the top spot in the Southeast is a testament to the exceptional physicians, nurses and clinical teams whose expertise and compassion impact patients every day,” said Patrick M. Battey, M.D., chief executive officer of Piedmont Atlanta and a Piedmont Heart physician.

The recognition extends beyond heart care. Piedmont Atlanta was also rated High Performing in gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, and neurology and neurosurgery, placing it among the top 10% nationally for care in those specialties.

The annual Best Hospitals list is designed to help patients and providers identify hospitals that excel in the care they may need.

Primary care is often where the journey begins.

After noticing an unusual lump, Brad's primary care doctor quickly coordinated testing and connected him to the next steps, helping him get answers without delay.

Looking back, Brad says that timely, coordinated care put him on a path he never expected, but one he didn't have to navigate alone.

"The personal and competent care I received at Piedmont has put me on a path to healing so I can continue making memories with my family. For that, I am forever grateful."

Brad's story is a reminder that a primary care provider is more than someone you see for an annual checkup. They're your first call when something doesn't feel right, helping connect you to the care you need when every moment matters.

There was plenty to cheer for at Miracle Kids Night with the Columbus Clingstones, but one of the biggest moments belonged to Greenlee Lamb.

A former patient at the Piedmont Bill and Olivia Amos Children’s Hospital and the 2026 Children's Miracle Network, Greenlee threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game, surrounded by her family, care team, and a community cheering her on.

Thank you to the Columbus Clingstones for helping celebrate kids like Greenlee and supporting Children’s Miracle Network. 🧡

The clinical research happening at Piedmont today is helping shape the care patients receive tomorrow.

In 2025, 1,392 patients enrolled in clinical trials at Piedmont. By year-end, 357 active trials were underway across our system, with more than 200 providers conducting research. Behind those numbers are patients accessing new treatments, physicians advancing medicine and communities benefiting from care informed by research.

In episode two of Care That Connects: Innovation Edition, we’re exploring how Piedmont research is helping expand access, improve outcomes and bring new possibilities closer to home.

Five months after undergoing a quintuple bypass surgery, Greg returned to the place where his second chance began.

Only this time, he wasn’t arriving as a patient.

He ran past the hospital that helped save his life while taking part in the Peachtree Road Race.

Recovery isn’t measured by miles alone. It’s found in every step forward, every milestone reached, and every reminder of how far you’ve come.
We’re honored to have been part of Greg’s journey and grateful to celebrate this incredible moment alongside him. 🧡
