Not every health threat is easy to spot.
Screening tests can prevent some cancers or catch them early, often before symptoms appear and when treatment is more likely to work best.
Talk with your doctor about which screenings are right for you and when to get them.
Another threat that's easy to miss: too much UV exposure from the sun, which can lead to skin cancer.
Simple options like shade, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, protective clothing, and broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher can help lower your risk.

It's Rural Road Safety Awareness Week! Children living in rural areas face unique risks navigating their neighborhoods, like higher speeds, fewer sidewalks, and poor lighting. While more deaths occur in cities overall, child pedestrians face greater danger on rural roads.

Our micro movers (kids walking, biking, rolling, or riding e-bikes and scooters) deserve roads designed with their safety in mind. Because they're smaller and less protected than people in vehicles, it's up to everyone to stay alert, slow down, and share the road.

By understanding these challenges, we can work toward solutions that keep all kids safe, no matter where they live!

🌑️ Hotter Weather Returns This Week β˜€οΈ

After a brief break from the heat, summer temperatures are making a comeback. Highs will climb into the 90s as early as tomorrow, with heat and humidity continuing to build through the middle of the week.

While humidity levels are fairly comfortable today, that won't last long. Dew points are expected to climb back into the 70s by Wednesday, pushing heat index values close to 100Β°.

As temperatures rise:
πŸ’§ Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
😎 Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
🏠 Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces.
πŸ‘΅ Check on older adults, young children, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
🐾 Don't forget your petsβ€”they need plenty of water and shade, too.
πŸš— Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.

Bartholomew County Emergency Management will continue to monitor the forecast and provide updates if any Heat Advisories or other weather alerts are issued.

Stay cool, stay safe, and stay weather aware! 🌞
