Have you ever reached the end of a busy day feeling exhausted even though you can't identify one particularly difficult thing you did? You may have handled dozens of small responsibilities, answered messages, thought about tomorrow, remembered something you forgot yesterday, worried about something that might happen next week, and carried several unfinished tasks around in your head all at once. Individually, none of those things may seem overwhelming, but together they can create an enormous amount of mental noise.
This accumulation is often described as mental clutter. Just as a physical space can become crowded with objects until it becomes difficult to find what you need, your mind can become crowded with unfinished tasks, decisions, worries, reminders, information, obligations, and distractions. Eventually, there is so much competing for your attention that concentrating on one thing becomes increasingly difficult.
