Dr. Kristine Slam, COSABreast Kristine Slam, MD, FACS, is a Board-Certified breast surgeon in practicing in Columbus since 2008.

Dr. Slam recently served as the 2020 Medical Staff President for MCHS, and previously served several years as Department of Surgery Chair. She is the Physician Advisor for the MCHS cancer program and is a breast surgery faculty for surgical resident education. She maintains a grant for breast cancer patients in financial need, COSACares. She is a strong advocate for patient education, evidence-based oncology management, and fiscal responsibility in medical care. It’s always exciting when new technology arrives to improve patient care. For me, this is the fun part of a long surgical practice, watching new technology come out that helps change practice and improve patient outcomes.

There are several genetic mutations that predispose a woman to developing breast cancer. BRCA 1/2 gene mutations are the ones we most commonly think of, and carry the highest lifetime risk. These gene mutations also predispose patients to ovarian, pancreas, and prostate cancers. 
There are multiple options that exist for managing gene mutation carriers, ranging from observation, to high risk screening, to medication for risk reduction, to prophylactic surgery.
