Politicians claim the country is "too broke" to keep your local emergency rooms open, yet they always seem to find billions to fund warfare, mass deportations, and ICE raids. They don't have a deficit problem; they have a morality problem.

Slashing healthcare funding means:

-Prevention | Researchers estimate a 10% spike in new HIV infections over the next five years — and up to a 30% spike in rural states. ❌

-Coverage | Over 15 million Americans will lose their health coverage – the largest coverage loss in U.S. history. ❌

-Public Health | Thousands of jobs eliminated. Nearly 450 hospitals in 44 states at high risk of closing or cutting services. Public health safety nets like Medicaid/Medicare, SNAP, and more are being gutted. ❌

-Research Funding | Patients abandoned mid-treatment. Potential cures for HIV, cancer, and other diseases lost. The medical research pipeline will remain broken. ❌

Last year, Congress cut $1 trillion from your healthcare. This year, they want another $1.5 trillion for war.

These cuts include gutting funding for local health departments. Researchers estimate these federal cuts could cause a 10% spike in new HIV infections over the next five years — and up to a 30% spike in rural states.

If you defund public health, HIV/AIDS wins.

Changes to Medicaid made in HR 1 could mean 10 million people will lose their benefits by 2034. HR 1 also cuts more than $900 billion in Medicaid funding over 10 years. In Ohio alone, more than half a million people could lose Medicaid benefits.

-The biggest loss of Medicaid coverage will come from new work requirements, even though most people with Medicaid who can work already do so.

-For folks who cannot work, even the smallest error on the paperwork to get an exemption could mean they will lose their benefits.

-Medicaid is the primary insurer for people living with HIV. Losing Medicaid benefits could mean thousands will lose access to life-saving medications.

Now is the time to speak up against the new work requirements!

It cannot exist without kink and s*x positivity. It cannot exist without acknowledging our history, our current political state, and our hopes for the future.

BRAVO is saddened by the devastating violence that took the life of Mark Rayburn-Velco and has left his husband, Brent Rayburn-Velco, with serious injuries. This violence and loss have shaken the Columbus LGBTQIA+ community.

Our hearts are with everyone carrying the weight of this tragedy, including Mark & Brent’s family, friends, peers, and neighbors. We know many others are also struggling to process the pain and uncertainty surrounding these events.

BRAVO’s confidential advocacy and support services are available to LGBTQIA+ people throughout Ohio who may need support, resources, or someone to talk to.

We are keeping Brent and all those affected in our thoughts during this difficult time.
