Keri Martz’s 28-year journey at OhioHealth has taken her from patient care assistant to bedside nurse to nurse manager and nurse residency manager, with each step shaping the leader she is today.

But nursing wasn’t always the plan.

Growing up, Keri wanted to be a teacher. That changed in high school when her great-grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. Seeing the care and comfort she received inspired Keri to pursue nursing so she could give that same support to others.

After caring for patients at the bedside, Keri found a way to bring her two passions together by teaching and mentoring new nurses. Today, as Director of Clinical Learning, she leads a team helping associates learn, grow and provide compassionate care to patients and families across OhioHealth.

Through every chapter, one thing has stayed the same: Keri has a heart for making people feel seen and supported.

“People will forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel.”

It’s a Maya Angelou quote Keri has carried throughout her career and a philosophy she puts into practice, whether she’s supporting a patient, encouraging a new nurse or leaving a handwritten note for a member of her team.

And after nearly three decades, Keri says she still hasn’t gotten bored. New roles, committees, stretch assignments and the people who encouraged her to take the next step have continued to challenge and inspire her.

“My foundation is here. I found a second home here at OhioHealth.”

Today, we’re celebrating Keri and 28 years of making a difference for patients, families and fellow associates. Join us in congratulating her!

Patients' goals are at the center of their rehabilitation journey.

In our inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, physical therapists provide intensive, individualized therapy built around what matters most to each patient. For some, that's returning home or getting back to work. For others, it's traveling, enjoying hobbies or participating in activities that bring meaning to their lives.

Whatever the goal, physical therapists create personalized treatment plans to help patients make progress toward achieving it.

The clinical team works together to address every patient's unique physical and cognitive needs, using evidence-based techniques and rehabilitation technology to support progress. From practicing walking to preparing for everyday activities at home and in the community, physical therapy helps patients build the skills and confidence needed for the next stage of their recovery journey.

💬 👩‍⚕️ “Kegels are great. The trouble is it’s such an easy word to say, but a very hard thing to do. And most people don’t do them correctly.” —Nicole Book, MD, OhioHealth urogynecologist.

Many people live with pelvic floor symptoms for years without expressing their challenges, often thinking that what they're experiencing is a “normal” part of life or that simply doing Kegels might fix the problem.

Your pelvic floor supports your urinary, reproductive and digestive systems — so when something feels off, it’s worth paying attention to and having a conversation with your gynecologist or primary care team.

Learn about what symptoms you shouldn’t ignore, what pelvic floor therapy really looks like and more about pelvic floor health on the blog. https://ohlth.co/3UiUEF6

There’s no single definition of recovery after a spinal cord injury.

For one person, progress might mean walking again. For another, it could mean driving, returning to work or school, getting back home or becoming more independent with everyday activities.

Spinal cord injury recovery varies widely depending on the location and severity of the injury, overall health and other factors. Specialized spinal cord injury rehabilitation can help patients build strength, improve mobility, learn new ways to complete everyday activities and use adaptive equipment and technology to increase independence.

During Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, learn more about spinal cord injury treatment and rehabilitation, what can affect recovery and what patients and families can expect as rehabilitation progresses.

Jan Hooks was the picture of health.

At 60, she spent her days running a farm, caring for rescue dogs and staying active from sunrise to sunset.
Then she started feeling unusually tired.

Sometimes she pulled over to take short naps before continuing her day. She chalked it up to long hours and hard work.

She was wrong.

The fatigue was a warning sign of a serious heart problem.

What happened next would change her life in an instant.

John Wilmes rebuilt his independence and now inspires others on the same journey.

After a spinal cord tumor left him without strength or sensation below his abdomen, John went from living life at "100 million miles an hour" to facing the challenge of rebuilding his independence one step at a time. His recovery journey led him through the inpatient rehabilitation, Neuro Transitional Center and Day Institute. Today, John is home living independently, returned to work and is again participating in many of the activities he enjoys.

From encouraging fellow patients, welcoming newcomers to rehabilitation or helping create opportunities for connection and support beyond therapy, John transformed his experience into a source of hope and inspiration for others navigating life after a spinal cord injury.

Small steps can lead to life-changing progress.

For people with a spinal cord injury (SCI), rehabilitation focuses on helping patients recover, improve movement and participate as fully as possible in everyday activities. Recovery often involves a combination of physical therapy, occupational therapy and other specialized treatments tailored to each patient's needs. Advanced technology also plays an important role.

One such technology is an exoskeleton, a wearable robotic device that can help appropriate patients participate in gait training, a therapy focused on standing and walking safely. The rehabilitation team carefully evaluates each individual's condition, abilities and goals to determine whether the technology may be beneficial. By supporting repetitive walking movements, exoskeletons may help reinforce communication pathways between the brain, spinal cord and muscles involved in movement.

During rehabilitation, patients use an exoskeleton to practice walking while therapists monitor gait and progress. The device can adjust the level of assistance based on each patient's individual needs and therapy goals. Exoskeleton’s also collect data on walking patterns and mobility, helping therapists identify challenges, monitor progress and make informed adjustments to treatment plans.

For some patients, the impact can be significant. “You talk about getting people who cannot stand and ambulate on their own, and you put them into an exoskeleton, and literally, in minutes, they are doing that very thing,” said Dr. Monifa Brooks, senior medical officer at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation.

Many secondary complications associated with SCI can be linked to decreased mobility, making opportunities for standing and walking an important part of rehabilitation. Research on exoskeleton-assisted rehabilitation has identified several potential benefits beyond gait training, including pain management, reduced muscle tightness, maintenance of bone density, improved bowel and bladder function, better posture and body alignment and increased opportunities for exercise and physical activity.

As rehabilitation technology evolves, tools like the exoskeleton help patients with SCI participate more actively in therapy, increase opportunities for gait training and build strength, confidence and mobility throughout their rehabilitation journey.
