There’s this weird expectation that therapists should somehow have it all together all the time because we help other people navigate life.
But therapists are still people. We can struggle. We can feel angry, hurt, insecure, overwhelmed. We can have relationship issues, bad days, moments where we take things personally. None of that makes us bad therapists… it just makes us human.
Lately I’ve really connected with Brother Ali’s song Personal, especially the line:
“I’m trying not to take it personal / But I’m a person, though.”
That one hit me 💯 because honestly… same lol.
Being a therapist (or any professional) doesn’t remove your humanity. Your emotions are not weakness… they’re part of how you relate to and connect with your clients.
