Labor Day Grill & Leftover Safety

Keep cookouts safe for family and friends with these essential safety rules:

Grill Safety: Set up grills strictly outdoors—at least 10 feet away from structures and deck railings—and keep kids and pets at least 3 feet away. Always verify internal meat temperatures with a thermometer: 160°F for ground beef, 165°F for poultry, and 145°F for steaks or pork.

Bonus Safety Tip (Leftovers): Never leave food in the "danger zone." Refrigerate perishable items within 2 hours of serving—or within 1 hour if outdoor temperatures hit 90°F or higher.

Outdoor Protection: Sun & Bug Defense

Soaking up the sun this holiday weekend? Guard your skin against two late-summer hazards:

Sun Protection: Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 15 to 30+) 15 minutes before going outside, reapplying every 2 hours or immediately after swimming and sweating.

Bonus Safety Tip (Bug & Tick Protection): Protect against West Nile Virus and tick bites by applying an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin over your sunscreen.
