The seeds planted decades ago continue to flourish.

From the original Dominican mission grew the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena, Gusau—a thriving Nigerian congregation carrying the mission forward with faith and determination.

Today, they serve more than 115,000 people each year through education, healthcare, and social ministries. They champion education for girls, prepare future leaders, and foster peace among Christian and Muslim neighbors alike.

What began with missionaries from Great Bend has become a mission led by Nigerian Sisters who continue to respond to the needs of their own communities.

The mission has changed hands—but not heart.

Its story is still being written.

A mission is built one relationship at a time.

Across northern Nigeria, Dominican Sisters walked alongside their neighbors, responding to everyday needs with compassion, creativity, and faith.

They taught children.

They cared for the sick.

They formed catechists.

They empowered women and families.

Among them, Sr. Rita Schwarzenberger, who arrived in Nigeria in 1975, led dry-season literacy and catechetical courses, helping adults learn to read Scripture in Hausa and strengthening local faith communities. Sr. Imelda Schmidt (1965–1976) traveled by motorcycle to rural villages, sharing practical skills, health education, and faith. Sr. Terry Wasinger improved community health by launching initiatives for clean water and sustainable agriculture while also serving as director of formation for the newly established Congregation. Sr. Gemma Doll (1975–1979) prepared future healthcare professionals as a nursing instructor before coordinating the nursing program while continuing to teach.

Even during times of political unrest and uncertainty, the Sisters remained present, serving, listening, and accompanying the people they had come to love.

Their ministry wasn't measured by the buildings they built, but by the lives they transformed.

Every gift brings peace to life. 💙

From the moment a woman hears God’s call, through every “yes” along the way, and throughout a lifetime of dedicated ministry, the Dominican Sisters of Peace care for one another.

This , you can Be Peace by supporting our sisters—from those discerning religious life, to sisters in formation and ministry, to our retired sisters who have given so much in service.

Your gift provides care, connection, and community:

🎨 $25 helps provide art supplies for residents at Mohun Health Care Center in Ohio.

💻 $50 helps cover technology costs that keep retired sisters connected with loved ones and allow women discerning a vocation to participate in virtual prayer groups and retreats.

🌷 $100 provides an outing for a sister at Sansbury Care Center, INC. in Kentucky.

🙏 $250 helps cover travel costs for retreats and gatherings for women discerning the call to religious life.

Together, we can honor the lives and ministries of our sisters while nurturing the next generation of Dominican women.

Will you Be Peace today? 💙 https://secure.qgiv.com/for/socialmediagivngday/

What does it mean to truly discern God's voice in your life?

After attending the National Dominican College Preaching Conference with students from Albertus Magnus College, Sr. Cathy Buchanan, OP, reflects on how discernment is more than making decisions. It is a lifelong practice of prayerfully seeking God's wisdom through Scripture and everyday life.

Read her latest reflection, and if you're feeling called to deepen your own discernment, learn about our upcoming Come and See Retreat this October.

Mission in Motion continues.

This week, we journey to Nigeria, where Dominican Sisters answered the call to serve through education, healthcare, and evangelization.

Through stories from our archives, we'll reflect on the Sisters who helped build communities of faith and service, and the enduring legacy carried on today by the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena, Gusau.
_______________

Every mission starts with someone willing to say yes.

On July 24, 1956, Dominican missionaries set sail for Nigeria to serve the people of what would become the Diocese of Sokoto. Soon afterward, Dominican Sisters joined the mission, bringing education, healthcare, and the Gospel to communities across northern Nigeria.

Churches, schools, dispensaries, and hospitals took root in places like Gusau, Yauri, Funtua, and Malumfashi, creating opportunities where few had existed before.

What began with a handful of missionaries became a foundation of faith, service, and partnership that continues to shape lives today.

This is where the Nigeria mission began.

The heart of Jeff Koch’s reflection is a longing to truly see—to behold the face of Christ and be filled with the glory of God. Drawing from Isaiah’s promise that God’s word never returns empty, Jeff invites us to recognize Jesus himself as that living Word, accomplishing the Father’s will and opening our eyes and ears to the reality of God’s kingdom. His meditation reminds us that through Christ—and through the Spirit who continues his work—we are given the grace to see, hear, and understand the life God desires for us.

The sisters arrived safely this morning after flying from Great Bend on a chartered plane (Silver Air Private Jets) made possible through the generosity of a grant from SOAR! (Support Our Aging Religious).

We are grateful for a safe journey and look forward to welcoming them to their new home at Mohun Health Care Center . Please keep them in your prayers as they begin this new chapter in their journey.

What a wonderful day of adventure and friendship!
Today, our residents and staff enjoyed a beautiful outing to Ash Cave, where we took in the breathtaking scenery, fresh air, and the joy of spending time together. After our walk, we gathered for a delicious lunch at The Olde Dutch Restaurant to relax and share stories from the day.
A special congratulations goes to one of our amazing sisters, who completed the entire walk through Ash Cave! In recognition of her determination and adventurous spirit, she was happily crowned "Her Magesty of the Hollow " for the day.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this outing so memorable. We’re already looking forward to our next adventure!
