Burnout can be surprisingly difficult to recognize while you’re still meeting deadlines, returning calls, and taking care of your clients, but you might start to notice that all of this requires a little more energy than it used to.

Often, burnout hides behind competence, and recognizing this has nothing to do with weakness.

Burnout rarely announces itself in obvious ways. It does not usually begin with a breakdown or a moment where everything suddenly stops working. More often, it develops gradually and quietly, which makes it easy to normalize.

Sometimes people hesitate to call OLAP because they don’t know what they would say.

“I haven’t felt like myself lately” is a perfectly good place to start.

OLAP is confidential. Call 800-348-4343.

The ABA released the largest study of lawyer mental health and well-being to date, surveying approximately 37,000 practicing lawyers across the country.

A few of the findings caught our attention:

• Nearly half of lawyers screened positive for high burnout.
• About 42% screened positive for risky drinking.
• 41% said their time in the legal profession has been detrimental to their mental health.
• More than one in four said they had considered leaving the profession because of mental health, burnout or stress.

If any of these findings hit close to home, you don’t have to wait until things get worse to reach out. OLAP provides confidential support to Ohio legal professionals, and judges can also connect with OLAP’s Judicial Advisory Group (JAG).
