Back to school?! Swap this for that! AAC Edition

📱 One device: There will always be one device that’s missing an update, has different vocabulary, or isn’t set up the same way. Keeping one device consistent helps everyone stay on the same page.

🔋 Designated charging station: A consistent spot helps the AAC user build independence, know where to find their device, and make sure it’s charged and ready for the school day.

🚗 Device out during rides: the need to communicate doesn’t stop only inside. Keeping it accessible during car rides (or on the school bus)

👯 Let siblings join the fun: Siblings are great communication partners! Modeling, exploring the device, and communicating together helps make AAC part of everyday family life—not just something adults use during “practice.” But remember! They are their words, so if they tell their sibling no or all done, we honor those words.

Due to unforeseen circumstances with our current landlord, Buckeye Speech & Communication is moving!

We’re so grateful to Minority Autism Connection for inviting us to be part of their Back to School Drive yesterday!

Our first community event was such a great experience. We loved connecting with families, meeting other local providers and organizations, and being reminded of just how important it is to show up for the community we serve.

We’re looking forward to more opportunities to connect, collaborate, and serve our community!

And a special thank you to my great friend and occupational therapist Shardae Burks for helping me hold down the BSC table 🫶🏾🩷

Before your person says a single word, they’re already telling you what they want.

That’s what gestures are. Reaching, pointing, showing you something, pushing something away. This is communication, and they build the foundation for everything that comes after.

This week, choose 2 gestures to model during everyday routines.

👉🏾 pointing — to the cup they want at snack time, to “go outside” when you’re by the door, to a picture in a book
👉🏾 reaching — with an open hand toward a toy or food before you hand it over, pausing so they can request it
👉🏾 showing — holding an object up toward you instead of just playing with it alone
👉🏾 shaking head no — turning their head or hand away from a bite of food they don’t want (this counts too — protest is communication)
👉🏾 waving — at the start or end of a routine, like leaving for daycare or saying goodbye to a sibling

Repetition and consistency help build awareness.

Save this handout to your phone. Check off the gestures your person already uses, then use it as your guide for what to model next.

Is your loved one not repeating after you?

Skip the “say ___” and try these techniques instead!

•just modeling the word (no need to say, say)
•give two choices (water or juice)
•pause and wait (even if you already know the answer)
•do what they do (they grunt you grunt, you will be surprised what may happen next)
•and celebrate every attempt to communicate (it won’t always be the response we are looking for, but keep encouraging any and responses!)
